McKinney Door Hinges Overview

McKinney is ASSA ABLOY’s line of high quality architectural hinges for commercial use. McKinney joined the ASSA ABLOY family of products in 1996. Under the ASSA ABLOY banner, we have greatly expanded the research and development, and manufacturing capabilities of this product line to have the most impact on improving custom hinge manufacturing.

Full Mortise Hinges
Full mortise hinges come in a variety of metals, finishes, sizes, and weights to meet all your load bearing and security applications. They include two, three, and five knuckle styles, swing clear hinges, wide throw hinges, anchor hinges, electric hinges, institutional hinges, and pivots.

Spring Hinge
Some door/frame/wall and even ceiling conditions make door closers impractical. An alternative closing device is the Spring Hinge. Generally, at least two hinges on a door must be springhinges to provide adequate closing force.

  • Spring hinges are an alternative to door closing devices. For maximum performance it is recommended to use all spring hinges on the door.
  • This non-handed spring hinge series is adjustable and tension can be added or reduced by means of a hex key that is provided
  • Caution: Use of gasketing for smoke or sound protection, wind conditions or unbalanced air pressure, twisted or misaligned frames or doors, door bottoms, improper latch adjustment may prevent doors from latching. Additional spring hinges may be required.

McKinney 1502-4.5X4.5-26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many McKinney 1502 spring hinges do I need on one door?
Plan on at least two spring hinges per door. The 1502 is a closing device in hinge form, and a single spring hinge will not generate enough force to pull a door shut and latch it. On a labeled fire door, NFPA requires a minimum of two spring hinges. For the most consistent closing, McKinney's guidance is to run all hinges on the door as spring hinges, and heavy gasketing, door bottoms, wind or stack pressure, or a frame that is out of square can all mean you need to add another one.
2) Is the McKinney 1502 spring hinge handed, and can I adjust the closing force after it is installed?
Non-handed, so the same hinge works on a left or right hand door and you do not have to specify swing when you order. Closing tension is adjustable after install using the hex key supplied with the hinge, so you can add spring force if the door is not latching or back it off if it is slamming.
3) What is the closest equivalent to a McKinney 1502 from another brand?
The Hager 1250 is the direct counterpart: a full mortise spring hinge, standard weight, steel construction, medium duty, same as the 1502. If you need stainless rather than steel for a wet or corrosive location, the Hager 1150 is the stainless steel full mortise standard weight version. BEST also offers the 2060R, a square corner standard weight spring hinge with a removable pin. All three are medium duty like the McKinney.
4) My door closes but does not latch. Is the spring hinge defective?
Usually not. A spring hinge that closes the door but stops short of latching is normally fighting something else on the opening: smoke or sound gasketing, an automatic door bottom, wind or unbalanced air pressure in the building, a twisted or misaligned door or frame, or a latch and strike that are out of adjustment. Two fixes: turn up the tension with the supplied hex key, or add another spring hinge to the door. Running every hinge on the door as a spring hinge gives the strongest and most even closing force.
5) What is the closest equivalent to a McKinney 1502 spring hinge from another manufacturer?
The Hager 1250 is the nearest match. Both are full mortise spring hinges in steel at a standard weight, medium duty rating, so the 1250 drops into the same mortise-prepped opening the 1502 was specified for. If the frame is prepped for radius corners rather than the 1502's square corners, Hager splits that into two separate models: the 1251 with 1/4 inch round corners and the 1252 with 5/8 inch round corners. Match the corner style to the existing frame prep and the swap is direct.
6) Which spring hinge should I use on an exterior opening where I want stainless steel instead of steel?
The Hager 1150 is the full mortise spring hinge built in stainless steel at standard weight, medium duty. The McKinney 1502 and the Hager 1250 are both steel. On a coastal, washdown, or high-humidity opening where the substrate itself matters more than the finish coat, the 1150 is the one to specify.
7) My frame is prepped for 4 inch hinges, not 4-1/2 inch. What spring hinge fits?
The McKinney 1502 is a 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch hinge and will not sit in a 4 inch prep. Orca Hardware builds a 4 by 4 inch spring hinge in three corner styles: the 4040 Series with square corners, the 4014 Series with 1/4 inch radius corners, and the 4058 Series with 5/8 inch radius corners, all medium duty. Pick the corner style that matches your existing frame prep. If the opening is prepped for 3-1/2 inch hinges instead, the Deltana DSH35R4 is a single action spring hinge at 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 inch with a 1/4 inch radius in steel.
8) Should I use spring hinges or a door closer on this opening?
Spring hinges are the answer when a closer will not work, or is not wanted. Door, frame, wall and even ceiling conditions sometimes make a surface closer impractical, and the 1502 puts the closing force inside the hinge prep instead of on the face of the door. What you give up is control: a closer lets you tune sweep and latch speed independently, while a spring hinge gives you one adjustable tension setting per hinge. On an opening with heavy gasketing, wind load, or air pressure imbalance, expect to add hinges rather than dial in a curve.
9) What screws come with the McKinney 1502 hinge, and will they work on a hollow metal frame?
Both fastener types ship with the hinge: 1/2 inch #12-24 machine screws for hollow metal frames and metal doors, and 1-1/4 inch #12 wood screws for wood doors and wood frames. That covers a standard hollow metal frame with a wood door, which is the common commercial combination, without a separate fastener order.
10) How heavy a door will a McKinney 1502 spring hinge carry?
The 1502 is a standard weight, medium duty steel hinge, which is the normal choice for interior commercial doors of average weight and traffic. For a heavy solid core or lead lined door, or an opening seeing constant high traffic, standard weight is the wrong pick and you want a heavy weight hinge. Among heavy duty spring options, the SOSS invisible spring closer hinges (216IC, 218IC, 220IC series) are the heavy duty alternative, though those are a concealed invisible hinge and need a different prep entirely.
11) What finishes does the McKinney 1502 spring hinge come in, and is there one I can paint?
Eight finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, BSP black suede powder, and 600 primed for painting. If you are matching a painted frame or a custom color across a building, 600 comes primed and takes finish paint directly. For matching existing commercial hardware, 626 satin chrome is the usual standard on a fleet of interior doors.
12) Can I get the 1502 spring hinge with a non-removable pin for an out-swinging exterior door?
NRP, non-removable pin, is available as an option on the 1502 and has to be selected when you order. That matters on any out-swinging door where the hinge barrel sits on the unsecured side, since it stops the pin being driven out to lift the door off. On in-swinging interior doors it is unnecessary.
13) Can I use McKinney 1502 spring hinges on residential interior doors?
The 1502 is built for commercial use, and its 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch size is the commercial standard rather than the 3-1/2 inch hinge most house doors are prepped for. It will physically work on a residential door only if that door is prepped for 4-1/2 inch square corner hinges. For a typical 3-1/2 inch residential prep, the Emtek 95013 spring hinges are 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches with square corners, and Deltana's DSH35R4 is 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 with a 1/4 inch radius.
14) Is a Pemko Markar continuous spring hinge a substitute for a McKinney 1502?
No. The 1502 is a butt hinge in a 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch full mortise prep, installed two or more per door to make up the closing force. The Pemko Markar FM400 and FM900 Series and the Pemko FS402 and FS902 Series are spring loaded continuous hinges built for toilet partitions at 80 lb load capacity, running the height of the leaf rather than sitting in discrete hinge pockets. The FS902 Series is 304 stainless steel. They serve partition doors, not a mortise-prepped door and frame, so the two are not interchangeable.
15) What is the difference between the McKinney 1502 and the SOSS invisible spring closer hinges?
The 1502 is a full mortise butt hinge with visible knuckles on the edge of the door, medium duty, in a 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch prep. The SOSS 216IC, 218IC and 220IC Series are invisible spring closer hinges, heavy duty, that conceal entirely within the door and frame when closed. The 216IC and 220IC Series carry a 20 minute fire rating. The 218IC is a 7 inch hinge requiring 1-3/4 inch minimum door thickness and the 220IC is 7 inch requiring 2 inch minimum door thickness, so the door slab has to be thick enough to accept the pocket. Choose the SOSS route when the hardware must not be visible, and the 1502 when a standard mortise prep is already in the frame.
16) I need a spring hinge with a removable pin. What are my options?
The BEST 2060R is a plain bearing spring hinge with a removable pin in square corners at standard weight, medium duty, matching the corner style of the McKinney 1502. The BEST RD2060R is the same removable pin plain bearing spring hinge in a radius corner. The 1502 goes the other direction on pin security and can be ordered with the NRP non-removable pin option for out-swinging exterior openings where the pin must not be pulled from the hinge side.
17) Will a McKinney 1502 work on a double acting door that swings both directions?
No. The 1502 is a full mortise spring hinge for a door swinging one direction. For a door that swings both ways, Deltana builds double action spring hinges: the DASH95 with solid brass cover plates, and the DASHS double action saloon hinge sold each in 4 inch, 5 inch and 6 inch heights. Those are the ones to use on cafe doors, kitchen pass-throughs and other two-way openings.
18) Which spring hinge is UL listed for a labeled fire door?
The Design Hardware UL Spring Hinge is a medium duty UL listed spring hinge. Emtek 95013 is a UL listed spring hinge as well, sold in pairs at 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 inch with square corners in plated steel, which suits residential-scale door prep rather than the 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 inch commercial prep the McKinney 1502 uses. Whichever hinge goes on a labeled door, NFPA requires a minimum of two spring hinges on that door.
19) The opening needs more closing force than medium duty spring hinges provide. What should I specify?
The McKinney 1502, the Hager 1250 and the Orca 4040 Series are all medium duty spring hinges. Where the door needs a heavy duty closing device, the SOSS 216IC, 218IC and 220IC Series invisible spring closer hinges are rated heavy duty. Note the door slab requirement on the SOSS units: the 218IC needs 1-3/4 inch minimum thickness and the 220IC needs 2 inch minimum. On a standard mortise-prepped opening, adding spring hinges is the other route, since gasketing, wind conditions, unbalanced air pressure or a misaligned frame can all keep a door from latching and may call for more spring hinges on the leaf.
