McKinney CSS-9 5-3/4 CH 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the McKinney CSS-9 strike and stop work on a center hung hospital bathroom door that swings both ways?
That is exactly the opening it is built for. The CSS-9 is a combination strike and stop for center hung or 1/8 inch inset doors, and it lets the door be pushed open in either direction without tearing up the frame. McKinney recommends it for hospital and nursing home bathroom doors, paired with the EP-5J. If your door is offset hung rather than center hung, you want the offset latch bolt location instead.
2) Can I use a McKinney CSS-9 strike and stop with a deadbolt or a mortise lock?
No on the deadbolt. The CSS-9 cannot be used with deadbolts at all. It is made for cylindrical or bored locks. Mortise locks are a maybe, not a yes: McKinney says it may not work with mortise locks, and for Corbin Russwin, Sargent and Yale mortise applications you need to clear it with the factory first. If the door has a mortise lock and you order without checking, there is a real chance it will not line up.
3) Do I need to buy screws to install the McKinney CSS-9, or does it come with fasteners?
Mounting screws are in the box. Every McKinney combination strike and stop ships packed with 1/2 x 8-32 machine screws. Note those are machine screws, so the frame needs to be tapped for them; you are not driving wood screws into a hollow metal jamb with this.
4) What is a combination strike and stop, and why use one instead of a separate strike plate and door stop?
It is one piece of hardware doing two jobs: it receives the latch bolt like a strike, and it acts as the stop the door closes against. On a center hung or 1/8 inch inset door that swings both directions, a conventional applied stop is what the door destroys when it is pushed the wrong way, and a plain strike gives you nothing to stop against. The CSS-9 combines them so the opening takes the abuse without frame damage. On a normal single-direction door in a rabbeted frame, you do not need this, a standard strike is enough.
5) What material is the McKinney CSS-9 strike and stop made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic restroom?
Brass, polished and plated. It is rated commercial, and the intended use is hospital and nursing home bathroom doors, which are about as hard-used as an opening gets. Brass takes the plating well, so if you are standardizing finishes across a facility it can be matched to the rest of the trim on the opening.
