McKinney T2714 Overview

McKinney is ASSA ABLOY’s line of high quality architectural hinges for commercial use. McKinney joined the ASSA ABLOY family of products in 1996. Under the ASSA ABLOY banner, we have greatly expanded the research and development, and manufacturing capabilities of this product line to have the most impact on improving custom hinge manufacturing.

Full Mortise Hinges
Full mortise hinges come in a variety of metals, finishes, sizes, and weights to meet all your load bearing and security applications. They include two, three, and five knuckle styles, swing clear hinges, wide throw hinges, anchor hinges, electric hinges, institutional hinges, and pivots.

The most common application is a flush door/frame/wall condition using a hollow metal frame with a standard hollow metal or wood door which is flush or 1/16" inset from the face of the frame, with a wall which is either flush (or inset from the
face of the frame. Recommended to hang door for 180Ëš swing: Full Mortise Hinge. The same hinge could be used with a wood or aluminum frame provided the door/frame/wall conditions are flush.

Oil Impregnated Bearing (TA)
One piece, non-ferrous, and self-lubricating bearings ensure even longer-lasting wear and resistance to clogging, corrosion, and hinge failure. This feature is standard and supplied on all five knuckle bearing hinges up to 5" height. All 6" or larger are Ball Bearing hinges.

McKinney T2714 4-1/2x4-1/2 26D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hinge do I need for a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door, and does the McKinney T2714 come in it?
The T2714 square corner full mortise hinge is offered in 3.5 x 3.5, 4 x 4, 4.5 x 4, 4.5 x 4.5, 5 x 4.5, and 5 x 5 inches. For a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door the usual pick is 4-1/2 x 4-1/2; 4 x 4 is common on 1-3/8 inch doors. Sizing goes by door thickness and width, so measure the existing hinge leaf before you order, and note the second number grows with thicker doors or heavy trim.
2) Is the McKinney T2714 hinge heavy enough for a door with a closer on it?
Yes for a standard weight door with a closing device. The T2714 is a medium duty, five knuckle steel hinge recommended for standard weight, medium frequency doors or doors with closing devices, hung for a 180 degree swing. If you are hanging a heavy door on a high traffic opening (a main entry, a stairwell that cycles all day), step up to a heavy weight hinge such as the Don-Jo HWBB84545 in 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 or the Hager BB1168.
3) Will a square corner hinge drop into my existing door and frame mortise?
Only if the existing mortise is cut square. The T2714 has square corners, so it seats in a hollow metal frame prep and in square-cut door mortises. If your door was routed with a radius corner (common on wood doors run with a router template, typically 1/4 inch or 5/8 inch radius), a square hinge will leave the corners short and you will have to chisel them out. For radius preps, a radius corner hinge like the Orca Hardware 4014 Series (4 x 4 with 1/4 inch radius) matches without rework.
4) I need non-removable pins on an out-swinging exterior door. Can I get the T2714 with NRP?
Yes. NRP (non-removable pin) is an option you select when ordering the T2714. Specify it on any exterior door or any opening that swings out, because the hinge barrel is exposed on the outside and a standard loose pin can be driven out. On in-swinging interior doors NRP is not needed.
5) Can I use a McKinney T2714 where an access control cable has to pass through the hinge?
No. The T2714 is a standard steel five knuckle mortise hinge with no electrical path through it. For an electrified opening you need a transfer hinge: the BEST CECB179-12C is a steel full mortise concealed bearing electrified hinge with a 12-wire quick connect, rated medium duty like the T2714. The Command Access ETH-CB70 is a three knuckle standard weight steel base energy transfer hinge, also medium duty, and the ETH-BB68 is the five knuckle heavy duty version. If the opening also needs door position status, the Command Access ETM-CB70 adds door position sensing on a three knuckle steel base, and the ETM-BB68 integrates a door position switch on a heavy duty five knuckle body.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a McKinney T2714 hinge from another manufacturer?
The McKinney T2714 is a steel five knuckle full mortise hinge with square corners, rated medium duty. The nearest match in another line is the Orca Hardware 3535 Series, a 4-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch square corner ball bearing commercial hinge also rated medium duty. Both are square corner commercial mortise hinges in the same duty class, so an opening prepped for a 4-1/2 by 4-1/2 T2714 accepts the Orca 3535 without changing the mortise. The Stanley Security FBB191 in 4.5 inch by 4.5 inch is the other close read: it is a five knuckle full mortise standard weight hinge, matching the T2714 knuckle count, though Stanley rates it heavy duty.
7) What hinge should I use instead of a McKinney T2714 on a high traffic door?
The T2714 is a medium duty hinge recommended for standard weight, medium frequency doors or doors with closing devices. For an opening that runs heavier than that, the Ives 3CB1HW is a steel heavy weight concealed bearing full mortise hinge rated heavy duty, and the Hager BB1168 is a full mortise ball bearing heavy duty hinge supplied with a non-removable pin. The Don-Jo HWBB84545 covers the same need in a 4-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch heavy weight full mortise ball bearing hinge, and the HWBB75045 in 5 inch by 4-1/2 inch. All are full mortise, so the door and frame prep concept is the same as the T2714; confirm the leaf size matches the existing mortise before you order.
8) Is a residential hinge an acceptable substitute for a McKinney T2714?
No. The T2714 is a commercial hinge, and residential lines are built for a different service class. The Delaney 3-1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch bulk steel residential hinges are interior residential hinges with a 5/8 inch radius corner, and the Delaney 4 inch by 4 inch exterior residential hinges use the same 5/8 inch radius. The Emtek 91013 is a residential duty plain bearing hinge in 3-1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch with square corners. Two things separate them from the T2714: the T2714 has square corners, so any 5/8 inch radius hinge will not sit in a square corner mortise without rework, and the residential plain bearing construction is not the oil impregnated bearing five knuckle build the T2714 uses.
9) Which hinges look like a McKinney T2714 but will not work in the same opening?
Several commercial hinges in the same size range mount a different way. The Hager 1129 is a half mortise plain bearing commercial hinge in 4-1/2 inch, so it mortises into the door but surface mounts to the frame, which the full mortise T2714 does not. The Hager 990 STEEL is a full surface prison hinge, 3 inch by 4 inch with a welded tip, mounting to the faces of both door and frame. The BEST DAP-3 is a double acting pivot for commercial interior doors, not a hinge at all, and the Hager 920 is a two knuckle concealed plain bearing hinge against the T2714 five knuckle build. The Stanley 2060R in 4.5 inch by 4.5 inch is a full mortise square corner spring hinge, which self closes rather than swinging free.
10) I need a non-removable pin hinge for an outswing exterior door - how does the McKinney T2714 compare to other NRP options?
The T2714 can be ordered with the NRP non-removable pin option, keeping the same square corner five knuckle steel body. Among other lines, the Hager BB1168 is a non-removable pin full mortise ball bearing hinge rated heavy duty, and the Deltana CSB45N is a 4-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch square hinge pair supplied with a non-removable pin. The Deltana DE44R5TA is a 4 inch by 4 inch security steel hinge with a 5/8 inch radius corner, so it suits a radiused mortise rather than the square corner prep the T2714 uses.
11) Is the McKinney T2714 the right hinge for a door that needs a concealed conductor for electric locking, or do I need a different model?
You need a different model. The T2714 is a mechanical five knuckle steel hinge with no conductor path. The Stanley Security CECB1900R54L is a three knuckle concealed bearing concealed conductor architectural hinge, steel full mortise, standard weight, 4-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch, square corner, left-handed, with 4 wires. Note that it is handed and comes with a fixed wire count, so the hand of the opening and the number of conductors your electric lock needs both have to be confirmed before ordering - neither is a consideration on the T2714.
12) Do McKinney T2714 hinges come with screws, and do they work on both wood and metal doors?
Screws are supplied for both conditions: 1/2 inch #12-24 machine screws for hollow metal frames and doors, and 1-1/4 inch #12 wood screws for wood doors. So one carton covers a hollow metal frame with a wood door, which is the most common commercial pairing. No separate fastener order is needed.
13) What bearing does the McKinney T2714 use, and do I need to grease it?
No lubrication. Five knuckle T2714 hinges up to 5 inch height use a one piece, non-ferrous, self-lubricating oil impregnated bearing (TA), which resists clogging and corrosion. Any 6 inch or larger McKinney five knuckle bearing hinge is ball bearing instead. Since the T2714 tops out at 5 x 5, every size is the oil impregnated bearing.
14) Is the McKinney T2714 hinge handed? Do I have to order left or right?
No handing to specify. The T2714 is a standard full mortise butt hinge, so the same hinge hangs a left hand or right hand door, and the finish is applied to both leaves. Handing only enters the order on hinges with wiring or electronics in them, like the Stanley CECB1900R54L, which is built left-handed with a 4-wire concealed conductor.
15) Which finish should I order to match the rest of the hardware in my building?
Eight finishes are available on the T2714: 600 primed for painting, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 satin bronze oil-rubbed, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, and US10A antique bronze. For a fleet of openings, 626 satin chrome is the usual match for satin chrome or brushed nickel levers and closers, and 600 is what you want when the hinges get painted with the frame.
16) How many hinges do I need per door, and can I hang a door for a full 180 degree swing on these?
The T2714 is recommended to hang a door for a 180 degree swing, which is what a flush door, frame and wall condition allows. Standard practice is three hinges on a door up to 7 feet 6 inches, adding one for each additional 2 feet 6 inches of height. Order in threes and buy a spare if you are doing a run of openings.
17) Will this hinge work on an aluminum frame or only hollow metal?
Either, with one condition. The most common application is a flush door, frame and wall using a hollow metal frame with a hollow metal or wood door that is flush or inset 1/16 inch from the face of the frame. The same hinge works with a wood or aluminum frame provided the door, frame and wall conditions are flush. If the door or wall is offset rather than flush, a full mortise butt is the wrong choice for that opening.
18) What is a simpler alternative to a McKinney T2714 for a low frequency interior door?
The T2714 is a five knuckle bearing hinge for medium frequency commercial openings. Where the door sees light interior use, a plain bearing commercial hinge covers it: the Orca Hardware 4040 Series is a 4 inch by 4 inch square corner plain bearing commercial hinge rated medium duty, and it keeps the square corner prep the T2714 uses. The Orca 4014 Series is the same 4 inch by 4 inch in a 1/4 inch radius corner if the existing mortise is radiused rather than square. The Schlage Residential S3P1010 is a 3.5 inch by 3.5 inch square corner plain bearing mortise hinge sold three to a pack, which suits a light interior door where the T2714 3.5 by 3.5 size would otherwise be the pick.
19) What should I specify instead of a McKinney T2714 on a detention or behavioral health door?
The T2714 is a medium duty commercial hinge and is not built for detention service. The BEST BB855 is a heavy-duty steel double weight concealed ball bearing prison hinge in the detention hardware line, and the Stanley Security double weight prison hinge in 5 inch by 6 inch is furnished with no holes and not swaged, so it can be welded in place rather than screwed. The Hager 990 STEEL full surface prison hinge, 3 inch by 4 inch with a welded tip, is the surface applied option where the frame cannot be mortised.
20) How does the McKinney T2714 differ from a three knuckle concealed bearing hinge like the Ives 3CB1?
Both are medium duty steel full mortise hinges for commercial openings. The T2714 is a five knuckle hinge with square corners and an oil impregnated bearing standard on five knuckle bearing hinges up to 5 inch height. The Ives 3CB1 is a three knuckle concealed bearing full mortise hinge, medium duty, where the bearing sits hidden between the leaves rather than in an exposed knuckle. The 3CB1-B is the same three knuckle concealed bearing medium duty commercial hinge. The knuckle count is what a distributor or spec writer will look at first: if the drawing calls out five knuckle, the three knuckle concealed bearing hinges are a different item even though the mortise is the same style.
21) Which 4 inch by 4 inch commercial hinge matches a square corner mortise, the McKinney T2714 or the Orca 4014?
The T2714 has square corners and is offered in a 4 inch by 4 inch size, so it drops into a square corner mortise. The Orca Hardware 4014 Series is a 4 inch by 4 inch commercial plain bearing hinge with a 1/4 inch radius corner, which is a different mortise profile. For a square corner 4 by 4 in another line, the Orca 4040 Series is square corner plain bearing, and the Delaney CH401X is a 4 inch by 4 inch commercial ball bearing hinge with square corners. Match the corner style to what is already cut in the door before you order any of them.
22) What hinge do I use instead of a McKinney T2714 when the frame is pivot reinforced or the door is oversized?
The T2714 is a medium duty full mortise hinge for standard weight doors. On an oversized or unusually heavy leaf, the BEST CB1969R is a concealed bearing heavy weight pivot-reinforced hinge rated heavy duty, built for frames prepped with pivot reinforcement. If the door swings both directions, the BEST DAP-3 is a heavy duty double acting pivot for commercial interior doors, which changes the hanging method entirely rather than substituting hinge for hinge.
23) I am standardizing 3-1/2 inch square corner hinges across a building - how do the Emtek options compare to the McKinney T2714?
The T2714 comes in a 3-1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch size with square corners and is a commercial hinge with a five knuckle bearing build. Emtek offers three square corner 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 pairs in plated steel: the 91013 residential duty plain bearing, the 92013 heavy duty plain bearing, and the 94013 heavy duty ball bearing. The 96213 is a heavy duty 3-1/2 by 3-1/2 square corner pair as well. All four share the T2714 square corner profile at that size, so the mortise is common; the difference is bearing type and the duty class each is built to.
24) What is the difference between the McKinney T2714 and the Don-Jo HWBB74545?
Both are full mortise hinges at a 4-1/2 inch by 4-1/2 inch size. The T2714 is a medium duty steel hinge with square corners, five knuckles, and an oil impregnated bearing standard at that height. The Don-Jo HWBB74545 is a heavy weight full mortise ball bearing hinge in satin chrome, rated heavy duty. The T2714 is also offered in satin chrome as the 626 finish, along with bright chrome, bright brass, satin brass, satin bronze, oil-rubbed satin bronze, antique bronze, and a 600 primed for painting option, so it covers a wider finish range at the same size.
25) Are Ives 1010RP hinges the same thing as a McKinney T2714?
No. The Ives 1010RP is a steel plain bearing residential hinge with square corners, sold as a set of three, from the Ives 1000 series and rated medium duty. The McKinney T2714 is a commercial five knuckle hinge with an oil impregnated bearing standard at heights up to 5 inch. The square corner profile is shared, but the 1010RP is a residential plain bearing hinge and the T2714 is a bearing hinge specified for commercial openings with closing devices.
26) Can I use a commercial mortise hinge like this on a residential door, or do I need residential hinges?
The T2714 is built for commercial use, and it will hang a residential door fine as long as the mortise is square cut and the leaf size matches. Where it does not pay off is a low-traffic interior bedroom or closet door, and there residential lines are the simpler buy: the Emtek 91013 residential plain bearing hinge in 3-1/2 x 3-1/2 square corner, or the Schlage S3P1010 3.5 x 3.5 square corner plain bearing mortise hinge sold three to a pack, which suits a full door out of one box.
27) What is the difference between a 5 knuckle hinge like this and a 3 knuckle concealed bearing hinge?
Knuckle count and where the bearing sits. The T2714 is a 5 knuckle hinge with the bearing races visible between the knuckles, which is the traditional commercial look and the standard McKinney build for medium duty openings. A 3 knuckle concealed bearing hinge such as the Ives 3CB1 (also medium duty) hides the bearing inside the barrel for a cleaner line. Both hang the same class of door; the choice is appearance and what the rest of the building already uses.
28) Can I mix Delaney Castlegate hinges with McKinney T2714 hinges on the same door?
Not without checking the corner profile. The Delaney RH40xx is a 4 inch by 4 inch residential hinge for Castlegate with a 5/8 inch radius by square configuration, while the T2714 is square corner throughout at its 4 inch by 4 inch size. Mixing a 5/8 inch radius leaf into a square corner mortise leaves a gap at the corners, and the T2714 is a commercial hinge against a residential one, so the two are also different service classes on the same leaf.
29) What is the closest small hinge to a McKinney T2714 for a 3 inch cabinet or utility door?
The T2714 starts at 3-1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch. For a smaller square corner opening, the Deltana DSB3 is a 3 inch by 3 inch square hinge sold as a pair, and the Deltana DSB35 is a 3-1/2 inch by 3-1/2 inch square hinge for residential use. Both keep the square corner profile the T2714 uses, so the mortise style carries over; the DSB3 covers the size the T2714 does not reach.
