1) What wire sizes can I land on the Mersen MPDB63 distribution block, in and out?
The line side takes one conductor per pole, 2/0 through #14 AWG, in a box-type connector. Each pole's load side has four openings sized for #4 through #14 AWG. So you feed it with up to 2/0 and split out to as many as four branch conductors per pole, none larger than #4.
2) Is the MPDB63 block rated 135A or 175A?
Both, depending on what you land in it. The Mersen MPDB63 carries 135 A on aluminum conductors and 175 A on copper. Size your feeder to the conductor material you're actually pulling; running aluminum and sizing to the 175 A number will overload the block.
3) Can I use this power distribution block on a 1000V DC solar or battery circuit?
Yes. The MPDB63 is UL rated 1000 V on both AC and DC, at 50/60 Hz on the AC side, which covers 1000 Vdc PV combiner and battery feed-through work as well as standard 480/600 V AC panel distribution.
4) What short circuit current rating do I get, and does it depend on the upstream fuse?
It does. Standalone, the block is rated 10 kA. Put it behind the right Mersen fuse and it goes to 100 kA: Class J, L or T at 200 A, RK1 at 100 A, Class G at 60 A, and Class CC or RK5 at 30 A. If your panel SCCR calculation needs 100 kA at the block, the upstream fuse class and amp rating have to match one of those combinations.
5) Which pole count do I order for a three phase feeder?
Three separate phases need the 3-pole version, MPDB63133. The MPDB63132 is 2-pole, for single phase line-to-line or a DC pair, and the MPDB63131 is a single pole for one conductor or a neutral or ground split. Poles are the only ordering choice on this block; wire range, voltage and amperage are the same across all three.
6) Can I run a #2 AWG branch out of the load side of this block?
No. Load side openings on the MPDB63 stop at #4 AWG. Anything larger than #4 has to come off the line side, and that side has only one opening per pole sized 2/0 to #14. If you need multiple large taps, this is the wrong block for that pole.
7) What torque do I tighten the lugs to on the Mersen MPDB63?
Line side: 120 in-lb for 2/0 through #6, and 50 in-lb for #8 through #14. Load side: 35 in-lb for #4 to #6, 25 in-lb for #8, and 20 in-lb for #10 to #14. Line screws are 7/16-20 hex, load screws 1/2-28. Torque per conductor size, not per side, since the load openings cover a wide range.
8) Are the conductors on this block aluminum or copper, and can I land copper wire in them?
The current-carrying bodies are tin-plated aluminum, housed in a glass-filled polycarbonate insulator. Tin plating is what lets you land either copper or aluminum conductors in them, which is why the block carries two ampacity figures, 135 A on aluminum and 175 A on copper. The block is also RoHS compliant.
