Mersen TRM15 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Mersen TRM midget fuse fit my 13/32 x 1-1/2 inch midget fuse clips?
The TRM Series is a midget-class fuse 1.5 inches long with ferrule ends, and it drops into standard midget fuse clips. Mounting is clip style, so there are no bolts or blades to deal with. If your holder is a midget block or an in-line midget holder, this is the size it takes.
2) Can I use a Mersen TRM fuse on a 480V circuit?
No. The TRM is rated 250VAC only, and a fuse must never be applied above its voltage rating because it may not be able to interrupt the arc on a fault. For a 480V branch or motor circuit you need a 600V class fuse instead, such as a 600V midget (Mersen ATM or ATQ family) or a Class CC device. On the DC side, the TRM is an AC-rated device at 50/60 Hz.
3) Why does my midget fuse keep blowing when the motor starts, and will a time-delay fuse fix it?
That is the classic fast-acting fuse problem. Motor and transformer inrush pulls several times running current for a fraction of a second, and a fast-acting midget opens on it. The TRM is a time-delay midget, so it rides through that starting surge and still opens on a sustained overload or a short. If you swapped in a fast-acting midget of the same amp rating, put a TRM of the same rating back and the nuisance opening usually goes away.
4) Is 10 kA interrupting rating enough for a control panel fuse?
The TRM interrupts 10 kA AC. For control transformer secondaries and small motor control circuits fed from a panel that is well downstream, 10 kA is normally more available fault current than the circuit can deliver. Where an engineer has calculated available fault current above 10 kA at that point, or the drawing calls for a 200 kA Class CC device, the TRM is not the right fuse and you need a Class CC in a rejection holder.
5) Will a Mersen TRM fit a Class CC fuse holder?
No, and this catches people. Class CC holders have a rejection feature that only accepts a CC fuse with the grooved rejection end. TRM is a plain ferrule midget at 1.5 inches, so it will not seat in a CC rejection clip. Use a standard midget block or in-line holder for TRM, and if the panel is built with CC rejection holders, order a Class CC time-delay fuse instead.
6) Can a Square D PowerLogic energy meter fuse pack be used in place of a Mersen TRM midget time-delay fuse in a motor starter?
No - those two parts serve different jobs. The Square D PowerLogic energy meter fuse pack is a set of three 0.5A 600V fuses intended to protect the voltage-sensing leads of a PowerLogic energy meter, so it is fixed at one small ampere rating. The Mersen TRM is a 250VAC midget-class time-delay fuse sold across a range of ratings from 0.25A up to 30A, with a time-delay speed characteristic that rides through motor inrush and 10 kA AC breaking capacity for fault interruption. For a motor branch or starter circuit you want the TRM at the rating the motor calls for, not a meter fuse pack.
7) What amp ratings does the Mersen TRM time-delay midget fuse come in?
TRM runs from 1/4 amp up to 30 amps: 0.25, 0.5, 0.6, 1, 1.25, 1.4, 2, 3, 3.2, 4, 5, 6, 6.25, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25 and 30 A. The part number follows the rating, so 1/4 A is TRM1/4, 6-1/4 A is TRM6-1/4, and 30 A is TRM30. Fractional ratings are written as fractions, not decimals, which is the usual place people order the wrong one.
8) How do I standardize TRM fuses across a facility without stocking every rating?
Most control panel work lands in a narrow band. Stock the ratings your drawings actually call out: fractional TRM1/4 through TRM1-1/4 cover control transformer secondaries and instrumentation, TRM2 through TRM10 cover most small motor and starter circuits, and TRM15 through TRM30 cover the larger midget applications. Every rating shares the same 1.5 inch midget body and clip mounting, so one holder style carries the whole spread and your spares kit stays small.
9) What is the difference between a TRM midget fuse and a metering fuse pack like the Square D PowerLogic set?
Different jobs. TRM is a time-delay midget for protecting motor and inductive load circuits, sized to the load and rated 250VAC. The Square D PowerLogic Energy Meter Fuse Pack is a set of three 0.5A 600V fuses sold for the voltage-sensing leads of a PowerLogic energy meter, not for feeding a load. If you are fusing meter potential taps on a 480V system, that pack is the part; if you are protecting a starter or control circuit at 250V or less, TRM is.
10) Are the Mersen TRM fuse terminals plated, and will they hold up in a humid mechanical room?
Terminals are tin-plated copper, so the contact surfaces resist the oxide film that raises resistance and heats a fuse clip over time. The body is GMG insulating material. In damp plant or rooftop HVAC panels, the usual failure is a corroded or loose clip rather than the fuse itself, so clean the clips and check clip tension when you replace.
11) Is the Mersen TRM fuse RoHS compliant for a spec job?
Yes, TRM is RoHS compliant, which is what most institutional and government specs ask for on wiring device submittals. It is a 250VAC, 50/60 Hz AC device, so it suits standard 120V and 240V control and motor circuits at either line frequency.
