Milbank 217MTB/22 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the Milbank 214MTB/22 and U214MTB/22 meter sockets?
Service entrance type. The 214MTB/22 and 217MTB/22 are built for overhead service only, while the U-prefix versions, U214MTB/22 and U217MTB/22, are set up for overhead and underground service. If the feed comes up from below, order the U version.
2) Do I need the 4-terminal or 7-terminal version of the Milbank MTB/22 meter socket?
That depends on the utility's metering requirement for the service. The MTB/22 comes in a 4-terminal and a 7-terminal configuration, in both overhead (214MTB/22, 217MTB/22) and overhead/underground (U214MTB/22, U217MTB/22) forms. 4-terminal is the common single-phase arrangement; 7-terminal is used where the utility meters a three-wire network or three-phase service. Confirm the terminal count on the utility's approved meter socket list before ordering, because the can cannot be converted after the fact.
3) Is the Milbank MTB/22 a ringless or ring-type meter socket?
Ring type. The MTB/22 uses a sealing ring with a small closing plate rather than a ringless cover. Utilities specify one or the other and they are not interchangeable, so if your serving utility requires ringless, this socket will not be accepted.
4) Can a Mulberry steel wallplate be used in place of the Milbank MTB/22-100?
No. The Milbank MTB/22-100 is a ring-type meter socket with a small closing plate, link bypass and a 1-100 ampere main breaker rated 22K AIC, built from G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish and fiberglass-with-resin insulation, and it surface mounts as part of the service entrance. The Mulberry 93101 is a 302 stainless steel 1-gang duplex receptacle wallplate and the Mulberry 76103 is a Princess size 3-gang plate for three duplex receptacles - both are cover plates for interior wiring devices and neither carries a meter, terminals or a breaker. If the job is metering the service, the Milbank unit is the part; the Mulberry plates cover an outlet box.
5) Will the Milbank MTB/22 hold up outdoors on an exterior wall?
The enclosure is G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish, and it mounts to the surface of the wall rather than recessing into it. The G90 galvanizing under paint is what gives it corrosion life in an exterior service location. Insulating barriers are fiberglass with resin.
6) What does the link bypass on the Milbank MTB/22 do, and why would I want it?
Link bypass lets the utility or lineman shunt current around the meter socket jaws so the meter can be pulled or changed without dropping the load. Utilities that require bypass on their service equipment will not pass a non-bypass can. The MTB/22 pairs that bypass with an integral main breaker rated 1 to 100 amperes at 22,000 AIC, so it acts as service disconnect as well as metering.
7) What size conductors can I land in the Milbank MTB/22, and how many per terminal?
One conductor per lug. The MTB/22 uses single mechanical terminals, so it is not set up for double-lugging a second feeder or a tap under the same screw. If you need to land two conductors on a line or load terminal, you need a socket ordered with dual-rated or double terminals instead.
8) Does the Milbank MTB/22 meter socket need a separate main breaker panel?
Not for the service disconnect itself. The MTB/22 is a meter-main: the main breaker is built into the socket and covers 1 through 100 amperes with a 22,000 AIC interrupting rating. You still need a downstream load center for branch circuits, but the disconnect and metering are combined in one enclosure, which saves a separate meter can and disconnect on the wall.
9) Can I use the Milbank MTB/22 on a 50 Hz system?
No. The MTB/22 metering socket is rated for 60 hertz service, which is standard North American utility frequency. For 50 Hz work you need equipment rated for it.
