1) How thick is the Milbank plywood back panel, and will my mounting screws hold in it?
It is 3/4 inch 7-ply plywood. That gives a self-tapping or wood screw about three quarters of an inch of bite, which is enough to hold contactors, relays, timers and terminal blocks without a nut and washer on the back side. The 7-ply layup matters more than the thickness for panel work, since cross-banded plies resist the panel cupping once you have unevenly loaded one side of it with gear.
2) What can I mount on a Milbank wood back panel?
It is built as a mounting surface for electronic controls inside an electrical enclosure: contactors, relays, timers, small controllers, terminal strips, power supplies and low-voltage gear. Anything that fastens with screws through a foot or a DIN rail chunk will land on it. What it is not is a structural or load-bearing shelf, and it does not provide a bonding surface, so any device that needs an equipment ground still needs a ground conductor run to it.
3) Wood back panel or steel back panel for mounting controls in an enclosure?
Wood is the faster and cheaper interior when you are mounting a mix of devices at arbitrary locations. You drill wherever you need, screws bite directly, and there is no drilling and tapping steel or fighting a fixed hole grid. Wood is also non-conductive, so a device that grounds through its mounting foot will not bond to the panel. Steel is what you want when the assembly has to be listed, when the panel itself is part of the equipment ground path, or where fire and combustibility rules cover the enclosure interior. This 3/4 inch 7-ply Milbank panel is the wood option and it is not UL listed.
4) Is a back panel included with a Milbank enclosure or do I order it separately?
The wood back panel is a separate accessory item, ordered by size against the enclosure it goes into. Milbank part numbers follow the size, so A-30P30W is the 30x30 and A-36P30W is the 36x30. If you are building out a can that shipped empty, the panel and its mounting nuts are what you add to get a surface to hang controls on.
5) I need a back panel for a tall control enclosure, what is the largest Milbank wood panel?
60x60 inches, part number A-60P60W, is the largest of the wood back panels. Below that the biggest sizes are 48x48 (A-48P48W) and 48x36 (A-48P36W). For an enclosure taller than 60 inches you will be running two panels stacked on the stud pattern rather than one full-height sheet.
6) Does the Milbank plywood back panel come finished or painted?
Unpainted, raw plywood. There is no sealer or coating on it, so in a wet-location or outdoor enclosure you should prime and paint or seal it before loading devices onto it, otherwise the panel will take on moisture and swell. Indoors and in a dry enclosure most electricians install it as-is.
