The SD34 is a 2 flute design, which means two cutting edges per step instead of one. Two flutes balance the cut and tend to leave a rounder hole with less bit walk in thin sheet metal and plastic enclosures, which is what matters when you are punching connector holes in a load center or junction box. Single flute bits clear chips faster and are often preferred for softer, gummier material, but the two flute cut is steadier for clean, on-size holes.

For thin material, largely yes. The SD34 steps from 1/4 to 3/4 inch across 9 sizes, so one bit handles the hole sizes a twist drill index would need nine separate bits for, and it self-pilots as it steps up. Where it does not substitute is thick stock: a step bit cuts only as deep as the step land, so for drilling through anything thicker than sheet metal or thin plate you still want twist drills or a hole saw.

It ships in a pouch, so it can go straight into a tool bag or gang box without a hard case taking up room. Keep the steps dry and chip free; the edges are what hold the hole on size.
