Metallics MN8HG – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are Metallics MN8HG nails Buy American or ARRA compliant for a government job?
No. The MN8HG is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this nail will not qualify.
2) Will hot galvanized nails react with pressure treated lumber?
Hot galvanized is the coating you want in wet exterior conditions, and the MN8HG carries it on a steel shank with a stated application of exterior areas affected by water and humidity. Note that bright or electroplated steel nails are the ones that corrode quickly in those conditions, which is the reason the galvanized version exists.
3) What is the difference between an 8d box nail and an 8d common nail?
Both are the same 8d length, but a box nail uses a thinner shank than a common nail of the same penny size. That thinner shank splits thin or narrow stock less readily, at the cost of some withdrawal and shear capacity. The Metallics MN8HG is the box version with a flat head, hot galvanized for exterior work. If you are nailing structural framing where a common nail is specified on the drawing, a box nail is not a substitute.
4) Does the Metallics MN8HG nail have a flat head or a finish head?
Flat head. That gives you a full bearing surface against the material, so it holds sheet goods, trim backing and fencing tight rather than sinking out of sight the way a finish or casing nail does. If you need the head to disappear for finished millwork, a box nail is the wrong choice.
5) Can I get Metallics hot galvanized box nails in a size other than 8d, or in a bigger container?
Yes. The MN8HG is the 8d jar, and other sizes and quantities in the same hot galvanized box nail line are available by request. Worth asking if you are working through a larger quantity than a 290-count jar.
