NGP 427-36 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the NGP 427 saddle threshold cover a standard 36 inch door opening?
Yes. The 427 comes in eight cut lengths, and 36 inches is one of them, so it drops straight across a standard 3-0 opening with no cutting. The other stock lengths are 48, 72, 80, 84, 88, 96 and 108 inches, which covers pairs of doors and wide storefront openings too. Aluminum extrusion cuts down cleanly with a miter saw if your rough opening falls between sizes, so order the next length up rather than piecing two together.
2) How high does the NGP 427 threshold sit above the floor, and is that a trip issue?
The 427 profile is 1/2 inch tall by 7 inches wide. That half inch is the full rise at the peak of the saddle, and the 7 inch width spreads that rise over a long, gentle ramp on each side. For openings where you need a lower rise, Pemko's 272 Series flat saddle threshold runs 1/4 inch by 6 inches instead.
3) Do I need to buy screws and anchors separately for the NGP 427 threshold?
Screws come with it. Each 427 threshold ships with #10 x 1-1/2 inch flat head zinc plated wood screws. Those are wood screws, so they land straight into a wood subfloor or wood sill. Over concrete you will need your own anchors, typically a sleeve or lead anchor sized to a #10, since the supplied fasteners have nothing to bite into.
4) I need a fire rated threshold for a labeled door opening. Is the NGP 427 the right choice?
Look at a different unit for that. If the opening carries a fire label and the spec calls for a rated threshold, Cal-Royal's CR3700 Series saddle threshold is built with a 3-hour positive pressure fire rating, and the Cal-Royal CR2000 Series is a fire rated and ADA compliant saddle. Both are saddle thresholds like the 427, so the install is the same kind of work.
5) What is the fluted top on the NGP 427 saddle threshold for?
Traction and drainage. The fluting is a textured, ribbed surface running the length of the saddle, so wet boots get grip instead of skating across bare aluminum, and water sheds down the flutes rather than pooling on a flat plate. It matters most on exterior entrances. For a hazardous or high-slip area, NGP offers the 427 with an SIA slip resistant finish in place of the standard mill aluminum.
6) What is the difference between a saddle threshold and a flat threshold for a door opening?
A saddle is a raised, sloped profile that crowns in the middle under the door and ramps down on both sides. It gives the door a bearing surface to seal against and keeps water and draft from running under, which is why it goes on exterior and weather-exposed openings. The NGP 427 is that type, at 1/2 inch tall by 7 inches wide with a fluted walking surface. A flat saddle, like the Pemko 272 Series at 1/4 inch by 6 inches, is a low plate that mainly covers the floor joint and transition between two finished floors. If you are sealing weather, take the raised saddle; if you are just covering a seam on an interior opening, the flat plate is less to step over.
7) Can I use one NGP 427 threshold across a pair of doors?
Yes, and the long lengths exist for exactly that. The 427 runs up to 108 inches in a single piece, so a pair of 3-0 doors at 72 inches of leaf plus frame is covered by one continuous extrusion with no seam under the astragal. Running it in one piece is the better install on a pair, because a butt joint at the meeting stile is where water finds its way through.
8) What does mill aluminum finish look like, and will it match my other thresholds?
Mill finish is raw, unfinished aluminum straight off the extrusion press, a dull silver grey with no anodizing or coating on it. It is the standard look on commercial thresholds, so a 427 will read the same as most existing aluminum saddles in a building. It will not match a dark bronze or anodized black threshold, and it will weather to a slightly duller grey outdoors over time. If you are standardizing a fleet of openings, run mill on all of them rather than mixing in an anodized unit.
