The P-Trap features solder cups and cleanout with plug. The fitting provides a water seal, preventing unwanted gases to enter the dwelling. The cleanout provides a means of clearing potential clogs in certain portions of the drainage system. Nibco E560350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 884 DWV P-trap come in?
The Nibco 884 cast bronze DWV P-trap with cleanout is made in four sizes: 1-1/4 inch (E560250), 1-1/2 inch (E560300), 2 inch (E560350) and 3 inch (E560400). Match the size to the DWV copper tube you are draining: 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 for lavatories and small fixtures, 2 inch for showers, floor drains and sink batteries, 3 inch for larger commercial drainage.
2) How does the Nibco 884 P-trap connect to the drain line, solder or thread?
Both ends are solder cups, C x C, so the trap sweats onto copper DWV tube of the matching size. The only threaded connection is the cleanout, which takes the supplied plug. Plan on a torch and solder at the inlet and outlet; there is no union or slip joint on this fitting.
3) Do I need a separate cleanout fitting downstream of this trap?
No. The 884 has the cleanout built into the trap body and ships with the plug, so you get a rodding point right at the trap for clearing clogs in that portion of the drainage system without cutting the line. Leave clearance at the plug so it can be backed out with a wrench after the trap is soldered in.
4) What is the Nibco 884 trap made of, and will it hold up in a commercial building?
It is cast bronze, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and dezincification resistant, which is why it holds up in drainage service where a plated tubular trap would corrode through. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing, and material and workmanship are per ASME B16.23.
5) Is a cast bronze solder P-trap the right choice, or should I use a tubular chrome trap?
A tubular trap with slip joints is fine under an exposed lavatory where you want to take it apart. The 884 is for the opposite situation: a permanent, soldered copper DWV trap for concealed or in-wall work, floor drains and commercial drainage where the joint has to be as durable as the pipe and access is through the cleanout plug rather than by disassembly. Once it is soldered in, it comes out with a torch or a saw.
6) Do I still need a trap if the fixture drain is vented?
Yes, venting and trapping do different jobs. The 884 holds a water seal in the bend that blocks sewer gas from coming back up into the building; the vent keeps that seal from being siphoned or blown out. You need both on a DWV system.
