Thomas & Betts BCG-M323 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What cable diameter range does the Thomas & Betts BCG-M323 cable gland clamp?
The BCG-M323 clamps cable with an outside diameter of 13 to 18 mm. Anything thinner than 13 mm won't seal properly in the compression insert, and anything over 18 mm won't pass through, so measure the jacket OD (not the conductor) before ordering. It's a straight body gland, so the cable exits in line with the thread rather than at an angle.
2) What size hole and thread do I need in the enclosure for a BCG-M323 gland?
It's an M32 metric thread with a 1.5 mm pitch and 9 mm of thread length. That means a 32 mm entry hole, and the 9 mm thread reach is what limits you on thick-walled enclosures or where you need a locknut plus a sealing washer stacked behind the wall. On thin sheet steel or a moulded box wall it gives plenty of engagement.
3) Can I use this gland on an outdoor or washdown enclosure?
Yes. The BCG-M323 is rated IP68 and NEMA 4, so it handles dust ingress and hose-directed water or temporary immersion when it's properly torqued onto the right cable OD. NEMA 4 is the rating most people are checking for on outdoor panels, washdown areas, and wet process rooms. The seal only performs to that rating if the cable sits inside the 13 to 18 mm clamping range.
4) Is this cable gland suitable for armoured cable like SWA or MC?
No. The BCG-M323 is a non-armoured gland. It clamps and seals on the outer jacket only, with no armour cone or clamping ring to terminate steel wire armour or interlocked metal armour, and no path to bond the armour to the enclosure. For SWA or MC you need an armoured gland or an armoured cable connector sized for both the jacket and the armour bedding.
5) Is the Thomas & Betts BCG-M323 listed for use in North America?
It carries cULus listing, plus RoHS, WEEE and LVD compliance. The cULus mark is the one an inspector or a specifying engineer will look for on a US or Canadian job, and RoHS matters if you're supplying into a restricted-substance spec.
6) Will a brass gland hold up in a corrosive or coastal environment?
The body is brass with a nickel-plated finish, which is what gives it its corrosion resistance and the metallic appearance. Nickel plating over brass is the standard choice for marine air, damp plant rooms, and outdoor panels where a plain nylon gland would chalk and a bare brass one would tarnish. For heavy chemical exposure, specify a stainless body instead.
7) What temperature range can the BCG-M323 gland be installed in?
Rated -20 to +100 degrees C. That covers unheated exterior enclosures in most climates and hot equipment areas such as motor terminal boxes and boiler rooms. Below -20 C the sealing insert loses its compliance, so for freezer rooms or arctic installs look for a low-temperature seal material.
8) How do these glands come packed for a large panel shop order?
They ship 10 per inner pack and 30 per outer carton, at about 0.02 lbs each. If you're building out a run of enclosures, ordering in multiples of 10 keeps you on full inner packs and avoids broken boxes.
9) Does the BCG-M323 gland need much clearance inside the panel?
It's a low profile compact design, which is the point of the BCG family: on a crowded gland plate or a shallow enclosure you can land entries closer together and still get a wrench on them. The straight body also means the cable leaves square to the wall, so plan your bend radius outside the box rather than inside it.
