Sta-Kon BB2NP – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What wire sizes does the Sta-Kon BB2NP butt splice accept?
The BB2NP is sized for 16-14 AWG stranded copper conductors, one wire into each end. Both ends take the same range, so it is a straight splice, not a step-down between gauges. If you are joining 12 AWG or 18-22 AWG, you need a different barrel size.
2) Does a non-insulated butt splice need heat shrink or tape over it?
Yes. The BB2NP is a bare copper barrel with no insulating sleeve, so the splice has to be covered after crimping, normally with adhesive-lined heat shrink or an insulating sleeve sized to the barrel. Electricians often prefer the non-insulated version for exactly that reason: you choose the insulation to suit the environment, and you can see the conductor seated in the barrel before you crimp.
3) Can I crimp the BB2NP with a standard insulated-terminal crimper?
No. Color-coded insulated-terminal crimp dies are built for the plastic sleeve on insulated terminals and will not form the barrel correctly on a bare splice. A non-insulated barrel like the BB2NP wants a non-insulated terminal die, which puts an indent or double indent into the copper on each side of the center stop. Crimp each end separately.
4) Why is the BB2NP nickel plated instead of plain tinned copper?
Nickel plating over the copper barrel is the high-temperature option. Tin plating softens and degrades in sustained heat, so nickel-plated splices are what gets used on heating elements, oven and furnace wiring, luminaire leads near the lamp, and similar hot locations. For ordinary room-temperature branch wiring, a standard tinned splice does the same electrical job.
5) Will a butt splice work on solid wire, or only stranded?
Crimp barrels like the BB2NP are intended for stranded conductors. Stranded wire compresses into the barrel and holds the indent; solid wire does not deform the same way and the joint can pull or loosen. For solid 14 AWG building wire, use a wire connector or a terminal block instead.
6) What is the exact part number and who makes the BB2NP splice?
Manufacturer part number BB2NP, a Sta-Kon non-insulated butt splice for 16-14 AWG, made in the United States. That MPN is how to call it out on a bill of material; the plating and gauge range are both baked into the number, so there are no suffixes to add.
7) Is a butt splice acceptable for repairing a cut wire inside a fixture or appliance?
That is the normal use for it. A butt splice joins two conductor ends in line, which keeps the repair compact enough to fit back inside a fixture canopy, appliance chassis, or control enclosure where a wire nut would not. Crimp both ends, then insulate the bare barrel. For a splice inside a junction box with solid building wire, a wire connector is the right tool instead.
