Sta-Kon A221 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon A221 fork terminal crimp?
The A221 locking fork terminal is sized for 22 to 16 AWG stranded copper wire. That is the small-conductor range you see on control wiring, thermostat and low-voltage device leads, and panel interconnects. For 14 AWG and larger you need a different terminal size.
2) What screw size does the A221 fork terminal fit?
The A221 is a No. 6 stud/screw terminal, so it slips over a #6 binding-head screw on a terminal block, device, or ground bar. Larger #8 or #10 screws need a different stud size.
3) Is the Sta-Kon A221 insulated or do I need to sleeve it?
It is a non-insulated terminal, bare metal barrel and tongue. If the connection needs insulation for clearance or code reasons at the device, add heat-shrink or an insulating cap over the crimp barrel, or choose an insulated fork terminal instead.
4) Should I use a locking fork terminal or a ring terminal?
A locking fork like the A221 goes on and off without removing the screw, which is why it is used in control panels and on devices you expect to service. The locking tangs resist backing out under vibration better than a plain spade. A ring terminal is still the choice where the connection must be captive and cannot slip off at all, such as battery and grounding studs.
5) What voltage is the Sta-Kon A221 rated for?
600 V, which covers standard commercial control circuits, 120/208 and 277/480 V panel wiring, and low-voltage work. It is UL recognized under file E9809.
6) Is the A221 terminal copper, and can I use it on aluminum wire?
The barrel is copper, so it is for copper conductors only. Aluminum wire requires a terminal specifically listed AL or AL/CU; using a copper-only lug on aluminum invites galvanic corrosion and a loose joint.
7) Do I need a special crimp tool for Sta-Kon non-insulated terminals?
Yes, a non-insulated terminal crimps in the non-insulated nest of the tool, not the color-coded insulated dies. No tool is supplied with the terminal, so a ratcheting crimper with a non-insulated die covering 22-16 AWG is required to get a repeatable crimp on this part.
8) Where is the Sta-Kon A221 terminal made?
Manufactured in the United States, which is what institutional and government buyers working to domestic-sourcing requirements need to document.
