The 83-9441 takes 22-18 AWG stranded wire. That is the small end of the range, so it suits control wiring, thermostat leads, low-voltage signal runs and appliance hookups. Anything heavier than 18 AWG will not seat in the barrel, and a 16 AWG conductor forced into it will not give you a reliable crimp.

The 83-9441 is the non-insulated version, meaning the bare tin-plated brass barrel is exposed after crimping. Electricians pick non-insulated when they intend to cover the joint themselves with heat shrink, when the terminal has to fit inside a tight housing where a nylon or vinyl sleeve will not clear, or when the connection runs hot. If you want the strain relief and the color-coded size marking built in, go with an insulated disconnect instead.

Yes, use a non-insulated crimp die, not the color-coded insulated jaws. Non-insulated barrels crimp with an indenter or oval die that forms the metal directly. The 83-9441 helps here: the barrel has a shoulder that stops the terminal at the right depth in the tool so the crimp lands on the barrel rather than the insulation entry.

The insulation entry on the 83-9441 is expanded, so it accepts a range of jacket diameters within the 22-18 AWG conductor range and gives the insulation some support behind the crimp. The limit is the conductor size, not the jacket: if the copper is outside 22-18 AWG, this is the wrong terminal regardless of how the jacket measures.

Each box holds 25 female disconnects, all 22-18 AWG with a .187 tab. That is a service-truck or panel-build quantity rather than a bulk bag, so plan on multiple boxes if you are terminating a full harness.

The 83-9441 uses tin-plated brass, which resists corrosion better than bare copper or steel and is the standard plating for general electrical terminals. It is still a non-insulated terminal, though, so in a damp location you should seal the crimp with adhesive-lined heat shrink. The terminal itself carries no environmental rating on its own.
