Metallics HHN78PL – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size does the Metallics HHN78PL heavy hex nut take?
The HHN78PL is a 7/8-9 heavy hex nut, meaning a 7/8 inch nominal diameter with 9 threads per inch. That is the UNC coarse thread pitch for 7/8 inch, so it mates with 7/8-9 UNC threaded rod, anchor bolts, or hex bolts. It will not thread onto 7/8-14 fine thread.
2) Is the Metallics HHN78PL plated or galvanized?
Plain steel, no coating. The HHN78PL is a plain finish carbon steel nut, so it is intended for dry interior use. For damp, exterior, or corrosive locations you want a hot dip galvanized or stainless heavy hex nut in the same 7/8-9 thread instead.
3) What is the difference between a heavy hex nut and a standard hex nut for 7/8 inch rod?
A heavy hex nut like the HHN78PL has a larger across-flats width and greater thickness than a finished hex nut of the same 7/8-9 thread. The extra bearing area is what structural and anchor-bolt work calls for, and it is why heavy hex is the usual choice on 7/8 inch threaded rod hanging heavy electrical and mechanical loads. If your drawing calls out heavy hex, a standard finished hex nut is not a substitute.
4) How many nuts come in a box of Metallics HHN78PL?
Fifty nuts per pack. The HHN78PL 7/8-9 heavy hex nut is sold in a 50 piece quantity, which is the practical buy for a run of threaded rod hangers or anchor bolt sets where you need two nuts per point.
5) Will the HHN78PL work on 7/8 inch threaded rod for electrical strut and trapeze hangers?
Yes, provided your rod is 7/8-9 UNC. These heavy hex nuts are catalogued by Metallics as electrical fasteners and thread directly onto 7/8-9 rod used for trapeze supports, strut, and anchor bolt installations. Keep in mind the plain steel finish is not suited to outdoor or wet locations.
