Metallics SNK1316 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics SNK1316 nut kit stainless, and will it hold up outdoors or in a wet location?
The SNK1316 is a hex nut kit made from 316 stainless steel. 316 is the molybdenum-bearing austenitic grade, so it handles damp, coastal, and chemically aggressive environments better than 304 or plated carbon steel, which is why it gets specified for exterior strut, rooftop equipment, and wash-down areas rather than dry interior work.
2) What part number do I order for the Metallics 316 stainless hex nut kit?
Order it as Metallics SNK1316. That is the manufacturer part number for the 316 stainless hex nut kit, supplied as a kit rather than as loose single-size nuts.
3) Should I use 316 stainless nuts or plated steel nuts for electrical mounting hardware?
For dry indoor panel and raceway work, plated carbon steel nuts are the normal choice. Step up to a 316 stainless kit like the Metallics SNK1316 when the fastener sees moisture, salt air, or chemicals, or when the bolt and strut it mates with are already stainless. Mixing plated steel nuts onto stainless hardware in a wet location is what starts the corrosion.
