Metallics MSNRCN3816 Nuts 3/8-16 Spring Cone Nut St-zn (Box 100)

It takes 3/8-16 threaded rod or bolts, 16 threads per inch, cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1. That is the coarse UNC series, so it mates with standard 3/8-16 all-thread used for hanging strut, conduit, and pipe. It will not run onto 3/8-24 fine thread.

Time on the ladder. A hex nut has to be threaded from the end of the rod and spun the whole way down; the spring cone nut pushes on at the point you want it and locks. On a ceiling full of hanger drops, that is the difference between minutes and seconds per point. Use a standard hex nut and washer where you need a fully engaged, torqued, removable connection, or where a code or engineering spec calls for a specific nut grade. Both take the same 3/8-16 coarse rod.

Surface hardness is Rockwell HR15N 78 to 90. The cone nut is a spring steel formed nut: it snaps onto 3/8-16 rod rather than being run down the full length, then seats and grips under load. The hardened surface is what lets the formed threads bite the rod without deforming, which is the point of using one instead of a standard hex nut on a long drop.
