Metallics JN170 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What grade is the Metallics JN170 nut, and is it strong enough to pair with Grade 5 bolts?
It is a Grade 2 steel nut, hardness Rockwell B68 to C32. Grade 2 is the general-purpose grade: fine for conduit supports, strut, hangers and equipment mounting. If your assembly is specified around a Grade 5 or Grade 8 bolt, match the nut to that grade instead, since a Grade 2 nut becomes the weak link in a high-strength joint.
2) Can I use these nuts on a Buy American or federally funded job?
No. The JN170 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, and country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project carries domestic sourcing requirements, you need a domestic-origin hex nut instead.
3) Is this zinc hex nut okay for outdoor or damp locations?
The JN170 is zinc plated steel. Zinc plating handles indoor and sheltered service well, and it is what most conduit and strut hardware uses. For sustained wet, washdown or coastal exposure, step up to a stainless or hot-dip galvanized nut instead; plating on a standard steel nut will eventually rust through in those conditions.
4) How does the JN170 ship, and what is the minimum I can order?
It comes as a jar of 100 nuts, and the jar is the minimum order unit. Shipping weight on the jar is 2.81 lbs. Other sizes and quantities can be requested.
5) Does the Metallics JN170 hex nut meet a dimensional standard I can put on a submittal?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2, the standard for square and hex nuts. That is the spec to reference on a submittal, together with the 7/16-14 thread and Grade 2 steel designation.
