1) Which ground rod size does the Cadweld GR1181G mold fit?
The GR1181G is sized for 3/4 inch ground rod. It is a rod-to-conductor mold, so the rod diameter has to match the mold cavity exactly; a 5/8 inch rod is the other common size in the field and needs its own mold, not this one.
2) What is the difference between GR1181G and GR1181GPLUS?
Conductor size is the only difference. GR1181G is set up for a 6 AWG conductor to 3/4 inch rod. GR1181GPLUS covers the combined 8 AWG solid and 8 AWG stranded configuration. Pick by the grounding electrode conductor you are actually welding, because the cavity is cut for that wire.
3) Is a Cadweld one-shot mold reusable or single use?
Single use. The GR1181G is a one-shot graphite mold, good for one connection and then discarded, so you order one mold per weld on the job. Reusable Cadweld graphite molds are a separate product family rated for many shots.
4) Do I need anything besides the mold to make the weld?
Yes. The GR1181G is the mold only. An exothermic connection also needs the matched Cadweld weld metal cartridge for that mold, an ignition source (flint igniter or control unit), and the rod and conductor cleaned and dry before the shot.
5) Can I use the GR1181G mold for a 4 AWG grounding electrode conductor?
No. The GR1181G covers 6 AWG, and the GR1181GPLUS covers 8 AWG solid plus 8 AWG stranded. A 4 AWG conductor needs a different Cadweld rod-to-cable mold sized for that wire. The mold cavity is cut to the exact conductor, so oversizing will not seal and the weld metal will run.
6) Why use an exothermic weld instead of a mechanical ground rod clamp?
An exothermic weld makes a molecular bond to the rod rather than a clamped mechanical joint, so there is nothing to loosen and no dissimilar-metal interface to corrode over the life of the install. A bolted acorn clamp is faster and inspectable, but on direct-buried or concrete-encased grounding, and on utility and substation work, the welded connection is what gets specified.
7) Will this mold work on a retrofit where the ground rod is already driven?
That is a normal application for it. The GR1181G handles rod-to-conductor terminations on new construction and retrofit grounding upgrades alike, as long as the rod top is exposed, clean, and the correct 3/4 inch diameter, and you have working room around the rod to close the mold and clamp it.
8) Is the GR1181G graphite mold suitable for stranded as well as solid conductor?
