1) What wire gauge does the Sta-Kon RB873U ring terminal accept?
The RB873U takes 18 to 14 AWG stranded or solid copper wire. The blue nylon insulation is the standard color code for that 16-14 AWG range, so if you're crimping with a color-coded tool, use the blue die station.
2) Why would I use a 90 degree ring terminal instead of a straight one?
The 90 degree bend in the RB873U turns the wire run perpendicular to the stud or screw it lands on. That's what you want when the terminal block, bus bar, or motor terminal faces out but the wire has to drop away along the panel wall, or when a straight terminal would force a tight radius right behind the crimp. If your wire approaches the stud in the same plane as the lug, a straight ring terminal is the simpler part.
3) Is this a ring terminal or a spade/fork terminal? I need something that can't vibrate loose.
It's a closed ring (closed barrel ring tongue), not a fork. The tongue is a full circle, so it cannot slide off a partially loosened screw the way a spade terminal can. That makes it the right choice on vibrating equipment, motor leads, and anything subject to inspection. The tradeoff is that you have to fully remove the screw or nut to install it.
4) Is the RB873U nylon insulated or vinyl? Does it matter?
Nylon insulation. Nylon is tougher than vinyl against abrasion and pull-through, and it holds up better where terminals get bundled, pulled through a wireway, or run warm. If your spec sheet calls for a vinyl-insulated terminal and nothing else, this is a different material, so check the drawing before substituting.
5) What is the conductor material on this terminal? I'm terminating copper wire.
The barrel and tongue are copper, so it's a copper-to-copper termination with 18-14 AWG copper conductors. Don't use it on aluminum conductors; those need a terminal rated for aluminum or AL/CU.
6) Do I need a special crimper for the Sta-Kon RB873U?
Crimp it with an insulated-terminal crimper sized for the 16-14 AWG (blue) range. A standard insulated crimp die compresses the barrel through the nylon sleeve without splitting it. Don't use pliers or a bare-terminal die, and don't solder the barrel: a proper mechanical crimp is what carries the current and the pull strength.
7) Is the RB873U made in the USA? I have a domestic sourcing requirement.
