1) Is Oatey H-20 95 tinning flux lead-free and safe for potable water lines?
Oatey 30140 H-20 95 is a 100 percent lead-free water soluble tinning flux, and it is certified to NSF standard 14 for performance and NSF standard 61 for health effects. It also meets ASTM B-813 and is approved for use by model plumbing codes, which is the combination inspectors look for on potable copper water piping.
2) Can I use this tinning flux on stainless steel or aluminum?
No. The H-20 95 flux works on all metals except aluminum and stainless steel. For copper, brass and other common plumbing metals it cleans and fluxes in one step; for aluminum or stainless you need a flux formulated for those alloys.
3) What solder does Oatey 30140 flux work with?
It is compatible with all common plumbing solder alloys, so standard lead-free 95/5 tin-antimony and tin-silver wire solders are fine with it. Because it is a tinning flux, it already carries solder powder in the paste, which helps the joint draw solder on larger diameter copper.
4) Will this flux leave green corrosion or residue on exposed copper?
It will not turn copper piping green. Being water soluble, the residue flushes off with water rather than sitting on the pipe, which matters on exposed runs in mechanical rooms and finished spaces where staining gets flagged on a walkthrough.
5) Do I need a separate brush, or does the Oatey 30140 come with one?
A brush is included in the container, so you can open it and start fluxing. No separate applicator to add to the order.
6) Do I still have to clean the copper and fitting before applying this flux?
