1) Does this Oatey drain work with a preformed fiberglass or acrylic shower base?
That's exactly what it's for. The 42093 is made for preformed shower stall bases: the body drops through the base drain opening and a fiber and rubber washer seals it airtight against the base. No caulk needed at the pipe connection either, since the 2 inch pipe is held with a mechanically compressed gasket.
2) Is the Oatey 101 PS shower drain a tile or mud-bed drain?
No. The 42093 is a one-piece ABS body for preformed shower stall bases, not a clamping ring drain for a tiled mortar bed shower pan. If you're setting a hot mop or sheet membrane pan, you need a two-piece drain with a clamping collar and weep holes instead.
3) Is a strainer included with the Oatey 42093, or do I have to buy it separately?
A universal 4-1/4 inch round snap-tite stainless steel strainer comes with it. It snaps onto the drain body after the drain is installed, so you can set the base and pipe first and add the cover at finish.
4) Can I swap the stainless strainer for a brushed nickel or bronze cover later?
Yes. The drain top accepts any Oatey 4-1/4 inch Universal Snap-Tite strainer, which come in a range of designer finishes. Those finish covers are sold separately, so if a tenant or owner wants the trim to match the shower valve, you replace just the snap-in cover and leave the ABS body in place.
5) Is this Oatey drain suitable for a slab-on-grade bathroom?
Yes, the 42093 is intended for slab construction. The solvent weld connection over 2 inch ABS DWV makes a permanent joint that can be poured around, and the snap-in strainer goes on afterward.
6) Do I need to caulk the pipe joint on the Oatey 42093 shower drain?
No caulking at the pipe. The 2 inch ABS pipe is secured with a mechanically compressed gasket, and the seal to the shower base is handled by the supplied fiber and rubber washer. It's a cleaner install than a caulked lead-style drain and one less material on the truck.
7) What color is the Oatey 42093 drain body?
The body is black ABS with a stainless steel strainer face. Once the base and cover are set, only the 4-1/4 inch stainless ring shows.
