1) Will the Oatey 42048 shower drain work with a preformed fiberglass or acrylic shower base?
That's exactly what the 42048 is built for. It's a two-part ABS drain with a receptor base that clamps into the drain opening of a preformed shower stall base. A fiber washer and rubber washer seal the body to the base for an airtight joint, and a drain tightening wrench comes in the box so you can pull the two halves together without improvising a tool. It is not a drain for a mortar-bed shower pan with a membrane liner.
2) What pipe does the Oatey 42048 connect to, and do I need to glue it?
It solvent welds over 2 inch ABS DWV pipe, so you need ABS cement and 2 inch Schedule 40 ABS. The pipe is secured with a mechanically compressed gasket, so no caulking is required at that joint. If your rough-in is PVC rather than ABS, this is the wrong drain body for it.
3) Can I swap the plastic strainer on this Oatey drain for a brushed nickel or oil rubbed bronze one later?
Yes. The 42048 ships with a universal 4-1/4 inch round Snap-Tite plastic strainer, and the drain top also takes Oatey 4-1/4 inch Universal Snap-Tite Strainers in other designer finishes. Those finished strainers are sold separately. Useful if you're roughing in now and the homeowner picks trim later.
4) Is this Oatey shower drain suitable for slab-on-grade construction?
It is. Oatey calls the 42048 out for slab construction, where the 2 inch ABS stub comes up through the concrete and the drain body solvent welds over it before the shower base is set. The strainer snaps on after the body is installed, so you can leave it off through the dirty part of the job.
5) Does the Oatey 42048 come with a cover to keep debris out during construction?
Yes, a drain cover is included along with the snap-in strainer. It keeps grout, screws and other job site debris out of the line so the drain stays clear and clogs less. Worth leaving in place until final clean.
