OATEY 271669 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Cherne 3 in. Monitor Well locking plug fit?
It is a 3 in. (75 mm) nominal plug, sized to seal Schedule 40 pipe. Drop it into a 3 inch Sch. 40 monitoring well casing and tighten the carriage bolt to expand the o-ring against the pipe wall. Note that the schedule 5 plastic pipe option only applies to Cherne's 2 in. and 4 in. sizes, not the 3 in.
2) How much pressure or water head will a Cherne Monitor Well locking plug hold?
Rated to 6.5 psi (0,45 bar) maximum back pressure, which is 15 ft. (4.5 M) of head. That covers a typical shallow monitoring well or observation casing. If your application puts more than 15 feet of liquid column against the plug, this is not the right device.
3) Will a monitoring well plug hold up to gasoline or solvent vapors in the casing?
Yes. The sealing element is a petroleum resistant nitrile o-ring, and the top and bottom plates are Estaloc plastic, which Cherne rates as chemical and petroleum resistant. That is why this plug is used on fuel monitoring and observation wells rather than a standard rubber test plug.
4) Does the Cherne locking well plug come with a padlock, or do I buy that separately?
The padlock is separate. The plug has a yellow chromate-coated locking latch built into it, and that latch accepts either Cherne's solid brass padlock or a No. 2 Master padlock. Order the lock alongside the plug if you need the well secured on the same trip.
5) Does this plug satisfy EPA rules for securing a monitoring well?
Cherne states the Monitor Well locking plug meets all EPA requirements for locking plugs. Combined with the padlock-ready latch, that is what separates it from an ordinary mechanical test plug, which has no locking provision and no compliance claim behind it.
6) Should I use a locking monitor well plug or a standard mechanical test plug?
Different jobs. A standard mechanical test plug is for temporary pressure testing of a line during construction and comes off when the test passes. The Cherne Monitor Well plug is meant to stay in the casing permanently, sealing the well and locking it against tampering with a padlock. If nobody needs to be kept out of the pipe, you don't need the locking version.
7) Will the plug's hardware rust in a wet well casing?
The wear parts are corrosion-minded: a stainless steel carriage bolt does the tightening and the locking latch is yellow chromate coated. The plates themselves are Estaloc plastic, so there is no steel plate sitting in standing water.
8) How heavy is the 3 inch Cherne well plug for stocking on the truck?
About 0.4 lb each, with a shipping volume of 0.014. Light enough that a service tech can carry several sizes on the van without thinking about it, and easy to stage in quantity for a multi-well site.
9) What color is the Cherne Monitor Well plug, and does that matter on site?
Green. On a site with multiple well types it gives crews a fast visual marker for which casings carry the locking monitor well plug versus other plugs in the ground.
