1) Is the Oatey 43905 an ABS or PVC backwater valve?
ABS. The body is ABS and it solvent welds with ABS cement to 4 inch ABS Schedule 40 pipe. If your building drain is PVC, this is the wrong material to weld directly into the line, you'd want a PVC-bodied valve or a proper transition fitting at the joint. Oatey's model number for the ABS version is 43905.
2) What does a backwater valve like the Oatey 43905 actually protect against?
It stops sewage from the street main pushing back up the building drain into low fixtures. On a surcharge, the quick action flapper closes and its elastomeric seal holds water tight, so basement floor drains, laundry trays and lower level bathrooms don't take the backflow. 5) Do I need to leave access above an Oatey 43905 after it's installed?

The access cap is the only way to reach the flapper once the valve is solvent welded in, so it needs to stay reachable, whether that means an access box in the slab, a riser to grade, or leaving it exposed in a crawlspace or basement ceiling. Burying it with no access means cutting concrete or pipe the first time the flapper fouls.
