For steam, caustics and dilute acids, Great Blue is the compound Oatey lists for that duty, and being a paste it lubricates the threads as it seals so you get a tighter make-up without galling. Tape doesn't lubricate the same way and can shred on coarse iron threads. Tradesmen often run both, dope over tape, on high-pressure metal joints. On threads over 2 inches, Great Blue is outside its stated range.
5) Will Great Blue harden in the can or in the joint over time?
No. It's a flexible, non-hardening, non-separating oil-based paste, so it stays pliable in the threads. That matters on MRO work where a union or valve may have to come apart again, and it means the compound won't crack and weep as a line cycles between temperature extremes within its -50 to +500 degrees F liquid range.
