1) What pressure can the Oatey 33401 gripper plug hold during a DWV test?
The 33401 end-of-pipe gripper plug is rated for 17 PSI, which works out to 40 feet of head pressure. That covers a standard water column test on a stack of that height. If your test head exceeds 40 feet, you need a plug rated higher, not this one.
2) Can the Oatey 33401 be pushed down inside the pipe, or does it only seal at the opening?
It seals only at the end of the pipe. That is the point of the end-of-pipe design: the ABS plate bears on the pipe end so the plug cannot drop down into the stack and get lost. If you need to seal partway inside a run, an end-of-pipe gripper is the wrong tool, use an inside-pipe or inflatable test plug instead.
3) Do I need a wrench to set the Oatey 33401 gripper plug?
No tools. The 33401 uses an extra large zinc wing nut you tighten by hand to expand the rubber O-ring against the pipe. That matters on a rough-in where you are setting and pulling plugs repeatedly, and the zinc nut will not rust up between uses.
