Yes. The 38979 is built around a 2 inch drain opening, and it gives you three ways to make that connection: rubber coupling, solvent weld, or threaded. So whether the stub-out in the wall is PVC, ABS, or a threaded nipple, you can land it without an adapter chain.

Either side works. The 38979 box allows left or right hand drain, so you can frame it into the bay that suits the trap arm rather than re-routing waste to match the box. Useful on a retrofit where the existing stub-out is already fixed.

Not directly. The 38979 is the CPVC version, meaning its inlets are made to solvent weld to CPVC. Running copper or PEX to it means adding transition fittings at each inlet, which puts two extra joints inside a closed wall. If the house is plumbed in copper or PEX, order the outlet box built with those inlet connections instead.

Two metal support brackets come with the box. You do not need to source separate hangers to secure it to the framing.

Metal. The box is 20 gauge steel with a white finish, which is why it holds its shape when the drywall goes on tight around the faceplate. Plastic boxes are lighter to handle but flex more during rough-in and drywall work.

It is the drain connection coming off the box. The rubber tailpiece slips into a 2 inch rubber coupling on the waste line, which lets you make the drain joint without solvent cement and without perfect alignment between the box outlet and the stub-out. On a remodel where the existing waste pipe is a little off, that flexibility saves a re-pipe. You can still solvent weld or thread the 2 inch opening if you prefer a rigid joint.

The 38979 is listed at 10 for product weight with a volume of 0.463, so it is a one-hand carry per box. On a multi-family rough-in where you are staging dozens of laundry closets, they stack and move easily without a cart.
