OATEY 38984 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Oatey 38984 washing machine outlet box be installed with the drain on either side?
Yes. The 38984 outlet box allows either a left or right hand drain, so the same box works whether the standpipe runs to the left or right of the machine. That matters on tight laundry walls where the drain stack position is already fixed.
2) What size drain does the Oatey 38984 outlet box take, and how does the drain connect?
The drain opening is 2 inches, and it can be made up three ways: rubber coupling, solvent weld, or threaded. That gives you a connection path whether you are tying into ABS, PVC, or an existing threaded stub, without adapting down from a different opening size.
3) Do I need to buy separate brackets to mount the Oatey 38984 outlet box to the studs?
No extra brackets needed. Two metal support brackets come with the box, which is what you fasten to the framing to set the box at the height you want in the bay.
4) Is the Oatey 38984 washing machine box plastic or metal?
It is a metal box, formed from 20 gauge steel. For property managers and contractors working multi-family laundry rooms, that is the difference from the molded plastic boxes, the steel shell takes fastening and knocks better behind the drywall.
5) What part number do I order for the Oatey single lever copper washing machine outlet box with a 2 inch ABS tailpiece?
Order Oatey 38984. That is the manufacturer part number, and it covers the metal single lever box with copper connections and the 2 inch ABS tailpiece in the standard pack. There is only the one configuration, so there is no handing or finish option to specify when you order.
6) How much does the Oatey 38984 laundry outlet box weigh for shipping and handling on the job?
The 38984 is listed at 6 pounds. It is a one-hand carry up a ladder or into a laundry closet, and light enough that the two included support brackets hold it in the bay without extra blocking.
