1) What do the connections on the Oatey 38870 quarter-turn valve mate to?
The Oatey 38870 is a 1/4 turn valve with a copper inlet and a 3/4 inch NH (hose thread) outlet, so the inlet solders to 3/4 inch copper tube and the outlet takes a standard washing machine supply hose. It is not a threaded pipe connection, so don't plan on a male or female NPT adapter at either end.
2) Can I use the Oatey 38870 as a replacement valve in an existing washing machine outlet box?
Yes, provided the box was piped in 3/4 inch copper and the old valve had a hose-thread outlet. The 38870 sweats onto 3/4 inch copper and gives a 3/4 inch NH male outlet for the washer hose, which is the usual configuration in a laundry box. If your box is piped in PEX or CPVC, you'll need a transition fitting or a valve built for that system instead.
3) Is the red handle on the Oatey 38870 valve for the hot side?
Red is the hot-side handle. The 38870 carries a red index, so it is the hot half of a washing machine pair; you'd order the matching blue-handled version for cold. Plumbing-wise the two are the same valve, only the handle color differs.
4) Do I get both hot and cold valves when I order Oatey 38870?
No. Part number 38870 is the single red (hot) valve only. A laundry rough-in needs a second valve for the cold side, so order two lines if you're doing a full box.
