Orbit FS4PB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Orbit FS4PB pancake box fit in a shallow ceiling cavity with only about a half inch of depth?
Yes. The FS4PB is 1/2 inch deep with a 4 inch diameter, which is why it gets used where joist or furring space won't take a standard 2-1/8 inch round box. It mounts flat to the underside of a joist or blocking rather than sitting inside the cavity.
2) Can I hang a ceiling fan directly from a 4 inch pancake box like the Orbit FS4PB?
The FS4PB is a fan support pancake box, built in sheet steel so it can carry the sustained load of a ceiling fan assembly rather than just a light fixture. As with any fan box, it has to be fastened to solid framing (a joist or a fan brace), not to drywall alone.
3) How many wires can I get into a 5.8 cubic inch pancake box?
The FS4PB holds 5.8 cubic inches, which is tight. That volume is sized for a single feed plus the fixture leads and a ground; it does not have room to act as a junction point for multiple cables or to carry a device. If you need splices for a switch leg plus a feed-through, use a deeper 4 inch round box and locate the splices there.
4) Pancake box or a deep round fan box for a ceiling fan install?
Go pancake, like the Orbit FS4PB, when you are mounting flat to the bottom of a joist and have no cavity depth to work with, and when the only conductors are the fan leads. Its 1/2 inch depth and 5.8 cubic inch volume leave no room for extra splices. A deeper round box between joists with an adjustable brace bar is the better call when you need wiring volume or cannot land on framing.
5) Will a standard ceiling fan canopy and 4 inch fixture plate cover the Orbit FS4PB?
It is a 4 inch trade size box, so it matches standard 4 inch ceiling fixture and fan mounting locations and the usual round canopies and crossbars made for that size.
6) Is the Orbit FS4PB steel or plastic, and does that matter for grounding?
Sheet steel. A metal box means the box itself is part of the grounding path, so bond it with the equipment ground, and metal is also what lets it take a fan's mechanical load. Plastic pancake boxes are not an equivalent swap for fan support.
7) Is the Orbit FS4PB usable on a remodel, or new construction only?
Both. It is used in new construction and in remodel work, where the shallow 1/2 inch profile is often the only thing that fits when you are mounting to existing framing under a finished ceiling.
8) What is the Orbit part number for the 4 inch fan support pancake box?
Orbit FS4PB, a 4 inch by 1/2 inch sheet steel fan support pancake box with 5.8 cubic inch capacity. That is the number to order against for a distributor or purchasing match.
