1) What size conduit knockouts does the 52171-OW outlet box have, and where are they?
Knockouts are on all four walls plus the back. Each side carries (2) 1/2 inch plus (1) combination 1/2 and 3/4 inch; each end is the same, (2) 1/2 inch and (1) 1/2 and 3/4 inch combination. The bottom has (3) 1/2 inch and (2) combination 1/2 and 3/4 inch. So you can land 1/2 inch EMT on any face and step up to 3/4 inch where a feeder or a heavier home run comes in, without hunting a different box.
2) Does the 52171-OW come with a cover or a mud ring?
No. The 52171-OW is the box only. A 4 inch square box needs a separate raised device cover (mud ring) sized to your wall finish depth if you are mounting a switch or receptacle, or a flat blank cover if it is being used as a junction or pull point. Order those separately.
3) Is this 4 inch square box suitable for a damp or unfinished area like a parking garage or warehouse?
The box is pre-galvanized steel with welded corners, so the seams do not rely on crimped tabs and the zinc coating gives it corrosion resistance for dry and normally dry interior work, which covers most warehouse, garage ceiling, and mechanical room conduit runs. Pre-galvanized is not the same as a hot-dip or a cast weatherproof box, so for direct wet-location or outdoor exposure use a listed weatherproof box instead.
4) Will a 2-1/8 inch deep 4 inch square box fit in a 2x4 stud wall?
Yes. At 2-1/8 inches deep the box fits inside the 3-1/2 inch cavity of a 2x4 stud wall with room behind it, and you still have depth left for the raised cover that brings the device out to the drywall face. Where the wall is a 2x4 with rigid insulation or furring, check your finished depth before choosing the ring.
5) Can I buy the Thomas & Betts 52171-OW one at a time or do I have to take a full carton?
