Also worth knowing: boring a 9/16 inch hole through a fire rated door voids the label unless the viewer itself is listed for it, so for rated corridor doors in multifamily or institutional work this is the wrong part.

Both combine a door knocker with a built-in peephole viewer in one unit, so a single bore serves both. The Pamex DD01-K180 knocker plate measures 2-1/2 inches by 5-1/2 inches overall with a 1-1/8 inch projection, and its viewer covers a 180 degree field. The Delaney 4 inch door knocker with viewer is built on a 4 inch knocker series and uses a 160 degree viewer. The DD01-K180 is a zinc die cast knocker with a brass viewer. For an entry door where you want the widest sight line and a taller plate, the Pamex is the wider-angle unit; where a shorter plate suits a narrow stile or a smaller door face, the Delaney 4 inch series is the more compact body.

Plan on a 2-1/2 by 5-1/2 inch footprint on the face of the door, with the knocker projecting 1-1/8 inches off the surface. That projection matters if you have a storm door or screen door in front of the entry door, since the two can foul each other when the storm door closes. Center it at eye height, because the viewer is part of the same unit and there is no way to place them separately.

Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 609 antique brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, and 625 polished chrome. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so you can match them against the lockset and handleset already on the door rather than eyeballing the color. For a property with mixed hardware, order by the number on the existing lock, not by the name.

No separate mounting kit. The unit threads together through the 9/16 inch bore and the barrel adjusts across the 1 to 1-7/8 inch thickness range, so the door thickness is handled by the part itself rather than by ordering a longer barrel. All you need on site is a 9/16 inch bit and a screwdriver.

The Delaney 6 inch and 4 inch door knockers with 160 degree viewers are the comparable knocker-plus-viewer units and differ by plate size and viewing angle rather than by that finish spread. The DD01-K180 is specified for residential use.

A 180 degree lens covers the full half-circle in front of the door, so someone pressed flat against the wall beside the jamb is still in the field. The 160 degree Delaney units leave a wedge on each side outside the view. If the tenant's concern is seeing who is at the door before opening it, the wider lens is the reason to pick the Pamex over a 160.
