Pamex PF2P30 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Privacy or passage on a pocket door: which Pamex PF2 do I order for a bathroom?
Privacy, function F76. Both faces lock or unlock from the turn piece on the inside, and the outside can be released with a coin or a screwdriver blade if someone gets stuck. Passage, F75, has no lock at all and both sides are always free, which is what you want on a closet, pantry, or laundry pocket door. The two are separate orderable versions of the PF2, not a field-convertible setting.
2) My tenant locked themselves in the bathroom behind a pocket door. Does the Pamex PF2 privacy version open from outside?
Yes, and it needs no special tool. The F76 privacy function unlocks from the hall side with a coin or a screwdriver blade in the emergency slot. That's the feature that matters if you manage units and take the call at 11pm. The Omnia 7012/L is another privacy pocket door lock we carry with an emergency release.
3) What is a direct alternative to the Pamex PF2 round pocket door lock if I need the same round trim in a privacy function?
The Orca Hardware PDLRD is a round pocket door lock in a privacy function, making it the closest round-trim counterpart to the Pamex PF2 privacy version. The PF2 privacy function (F76) locks both sides by an inside turn-piece with a coin or screwdriver release on the outside. Weslock also builds a round pocket door lock, the 0627, but that one is passage only with an adjustable backset and full lip strike, so it is the round match for the PF2 passage function rather than the privacy one.
4) I want square or rectangular trim instead of a round pocket door lock - what are my options?
The Pamex PF2 uses round trim with a 2-1/8 inch diameter door prep. For an angular look, the Orca Hardware PDLSQ is a square pocket door lock in a privacy function, and the Weslock 0577 is a rectangular privacy pocket door lock with an adjustable backset and full lip strike. On the passage side, the Weslock 0527 is a rectangular passage pocket door lock with no locking. Emtek's 2102 privacy and 2101 passage pocket door locks use a 2-3/8 by 3-1/8 inch rectangular trim, and Omnia's 7012/L privacy and 7012/N passage sets use modern rectangular trim. Note that the round versus rectangular choice changes the door prep, so the swap is not a drop-in over an existing round cutout.
5) I need a pocket door lock that takes a key, not just a privacy turn - what should I order?
The Pamex PF2 is built in privacy and passage functions only: privacy (F76) locks by an inside turn-piece with a coin or screwdriver release outside, and passage (F75) is always free both sides. For a keyed opening, the Omnia 7035/A is a keyed entry pocket door lock with modern rectangular trim and solid brass construction, and the Emtek 2153 narrow modern rectangular pocket door mortise lock, 2 by 7-1/4 inch, is a keyed unit. Both are mortise-style bodies, so the door prep differs from the PF2's 2-1/8 inch round bore.
6) Is the Pamex PF2 round pocket door lock rated for commercial use?
It's a residential lock. The PF2 meets ANSI A156.2 Grade 3, which is the light-duty tier, and Pamex classes it residential. For apartment interiors, single-family, and light hospitality guest rooms that's the normal spec. For a high-traffic commercial opening you'd be better served by a heavier pocket door latch such as the Rockwood 891 privacy latch.
7) What finishes does the Pamex PF2 pocket door lock come in, and can I match the rest of my doors?
Five: 625 polished chrome, 626 satin chrome, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, and USP11 Venetian bronze. Every one of those is offered in both privacy and passage, so on a job where the bathroom pocket door needs a lock and the closet next to it doesn't, both openings still match. Those are standard BHMA finish numbers, so 626 satin chrome and 619 satin nickel will read the same as the 626 and 619 on your knobs and levers.
8) Round or rectangular pocket door lock, what's the difference on the install?
Trim shape and the hole you cut. The Pamex PF2 is round and drops into a 2-1/8 inch circular bore, which is the same hole a bored knobset uses, so it's the easier retrofit on a door that already has one. Rectangular plates such as the Weslock 0577 or the Omnia 7012/L need a rectangular mortise cut in the face instead. Shape aside, the function is the same job: Orca Hardware sells the pairing directly, PDLRD round and PDLSQ square, both privacy.
9) Does the Pamex PF2 include the track or hardware to hang the pocket door?
No. The PF2 is the lock and trim only, the part that mounts in the door face and latches to the jamb. Hanging the door is a separate purchase: a frame kit such as the Orca PK1200, or track like the NGP SLAL250PD72 72 inch aluminum pocket door track rated to 250 pounds. Order that alongside the lock on new construction.
10) What is the simplest pocket door pull if I do not need any locking at all?
The Pamex PF2 passage function (F75) leaves both sides always free, which is the no-lock option in a round 2-1/8 inch prep. Other non-locking choices are the Deltana SDP25 pocket door lock at 2-1/2 by 2-3/4 inch in passage, the Weslock 0527 rectangular passage with no locking, the Emtek 2101 passage pocket door lock at 2-3/8 by 3-1/8 inch, and the Omnia 7012/N modern rectangular passage set with a mortise edge pull. If the door never latches and you only want matching trim on both faces, the Omnia 7012/PD is a pair dummy set with a mortise edge pull.
11) Which pocket door locks look like a substitute for the Pamex PF2 but are not?
Two items in the pocket door family are not lock replacements. The Orca Hardware PK1200 is a pocket door frame kit - the framing set for the wall cavity, carrying a door thickness range of 1 inch or 1-3/4 inch - and the NGP SLAL250PD72 is a 72 inch aluminum pocket door track rated up to 250 pounds. Neither latches the door. The PF2 is the face hardware itself, a round lock in privacy or passage that mounts in a 2-1/8 inch diameter door prep, and it does not include framing or track.
12) I am replacing a bathroom pocket door latch and want something larger and more decorative than a small round lock - what else works?
The Pamex PF2 is a compact round unit in a 2-1/8 inch diameter prep, offered in polished chrome, satin chrome, satin nickel, matte black and Venetian bronze. For a larger decorative face in the same privacy duty, the Deltana SDL60 is a decorative pocket door lock at 6 inch in privacy, and the Emtek #8 classic arched pocket door mortise lock is a brass unit at 2-7/8 by 7-5/8 inch. The Emtek 2153 narrow modern rectangular mortise lock runs 2 by 7-1/4 inch for a slimmer tall plate. The taller mortise bodies need an edge mortise rather than the PF2's round bore.
13) For a heavy-traffic multi-family pocket door, is there a heavier-duty privacy lock than the Pamex PF2?
The Pamex PF2 meets ANSI A156.2 Grade 3 in a brass build and is specified for residential use. The Deltana SDLA325 is a heavy-duty pocket door lock, adjustable, at 3-1/4 by 2-1/4 inch in a privacy function, and the Rockwood 891 is a pocket door privacy latch. Both are privacy-function alternatives worth pricing when the opening sees more cycles than a single-family bath door.
14) Does the Pamex PF2 have an emergency release, and which alternatives offer one?
Yes - the PF2 privacy function (F76) is unlocked from the outside with a coin or screwdriver, which is the emergency release on that unit. Among the alternatives, the Omnia 7012/L is a modern rectangular pocket door lock with a privacy function and emergency release. For a bath or bedroom pocket door where someone could be locked in, both give you outside access.
