PDQ 231626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Should I use a low dome floor stop like the PDQ 231 or a wall stop instead?
A floor stop like the 231 is the choice when there is no wall behind the door to catch it, or the wall is drywall with no blocking, or the door swings into open space. A wall stop is better where the door opens against a solid wall at the right height, since nothing sits in the walking path. PDQ's general hardware line covers both: convex, concave and adhesive-backed bumper wall stops as well as floor stops. The 231's low profile keeps the trip hazard down compared with a high dome or riser stop, which is why it is commonly used in corridors and ADA paths of travel.
2) Will the PDQ 231 floor stop hold a door open?
No. The 231 is a stop only, with no hold-open feature. PDQ's floor stop range does include versions with a keeper or hold open, and the line also carries a door holder with stop, kick down stops in 4 inch and 5 inch lengths, and a 5 inch hinge stop. If the door needs to stay put when parked, pick one of those instead of the 231.
3) Does a low profile floor stop like the PDQ 231 work on carpet, or do I need a riser?
Low dome stops such as the 231 are sized to mount on hard flooring. Over thick carpet or a raised pad the dome can sit too low for the door bottom to make contact, and that is exactly what PDQ's riser-style floor stop is for. On tile, VCT, sealed concrete or hardwood the low profile 231 is the right pick, and it keeps less obstruction in the walking path than a high dome.
4) What finishes does the PDQ 231 low profile floor stop come in, and how do I order the right part number?
Three finishes: 605 bright brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, and 626 satin chrome. The finish code tacks onto the model number, so the bright brass stop orders as 231605, dark oxidized satin bronze as 231613E, and satin chrome as 231626. If you are matching existing hardware in a building, 626 satin chrome is the usual pairing with satin chrome levers and hinges, and 613E with oil-rubbed/dark bronze trim.
5) Is the PDQ 231 floor stop rated for commercial door openings or just residential use?
The 231 is a commercial-grade floor stop, part of PDQ's general hardware line of stops, holders, latches and door accessories for commercial openings. It is the kind of part specified on office, school and multi-family corridor doors rather than a light residential bumper.
6) Can I standardize all my door stops across a building using PDQ 231 floor stops?
Within a facility, the 231 works as the standard where doors swing over hard flooring and need a plain stop. Openings that need something different are usually the exceptions: doors over carpet (riser style), doors that must park open (keeper or hold-open floor stop, or a kick down stop), and doors that can catch a solid wall (wall stop). PDQ's general hardware line covers all of those in the same architectural finishes, so you can keep 626 satin chrome or 613E dark oxidized satin bronze consistent across the whole building even where the stop type changes.
7) Is the PDQ 231 floor stop handed, or does one part work on both left and right hand doors?
A dome floor stop is not handed. The 231 mounts to the floor in the door's swing path, so the same part number serves left hand, right hand and reverse bevel doors, and it works on both leaves of a pair. The only thing that changes between openings is where you locate it on the floor relative to the desired swing.
8) What else from the PDQ accessory line should I order with floor stops to finish out a door opening?
Common companions on the same line: door silencers for metal or wood frames to quiet the strike side, a dust proof strike where a flush bolt drops into the floor, latch protectors (including a 3-3/8 inch notched version and a 12 inch interlock version) on out-swinging exterior doors, and a 160 degree door viewer on entry doors. Coat and wardrobe hooks, roller latches and ball catches come from the same family if you are spec'ing a full package.
