PDQ 571626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a roller latch like the PDQ 571 used for, and when should I use one instead of a latchset?
A roller latch holds a door closed by friction, not by a locking bolt. A spring loaded roller in the edge of the door rides into a strike on the frame and keeps the door from drifting open, and you simply push or pull the door to release it. The PDQ 571 is a commercial roller latch supplied with a T strike. Use one on closet, utility, storeroom or office doors that need to stay shut but never need to latch or lock, and where a push-pull operation is wanted. If the door needs to be secured or key controlled, you need a cylindrical or mortise lock instead, not a roller latch.
2) Does the PDQ 571 come with a strike, or do I have to order one separately?
The strike is included. The 571 ships as a roller latch with a T strike, so you get both halves of the assembly in one part number. If your frame prep calls for a different strike shape, PDQ builds the same roller latch with ASA, full lip and angle stop strikes as separate models, and replacement roller latch strikes are offered on their own.
3) I need to replace a roller latch but my frame already has an ASA strike cutout. Will the 571 work?
No. The 571 is furnished with a T strike, which is a different prep from an ASA strike. If the frame is already cut for ASA, order the PDQ roller latch built with the ASA strike rather than the 571 so you are not patching or re-prepping the jamb. PDQ also offers full lip and angle stop strike versions for other frame conditions.
4) Which finishes does the PDQ 571 roller latch come in, and which one matches brushed stainless hardware?
Three finishes: 605 bright brass, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, and 626 satin chrome. For an opening with brushed or satin stainless levers and hinges, 626 satin chrome is the closest visual match. 605 is the polished brass option and 613E is the dark bronze used on traditional or oil rubbed looking openings. Order by the combined number, for example 571626.
5) What is the difference between a roller latch and a ball catch for holding a door shut?
Both hold a door by friction, but they mount differently. A roller latch like the PDQ 571 goes into the edge of the door and engages a strike on the jamb, so it works like a latch face and suits a standard commercial edge prep. A ball catch mounts in the top edge or face of the door and engages a plate on the frame head, and PDQ's version is adjustable for tension, which is useful when a door is slightly out of plumb or the hold needs tuning. Pick the roller latch when the prep is on the lock edge and you want a strike on the jamb.
6) Can I use the PDQ 571 roller latch on a fire rated door?
Nothing in PDQ's data ties the 571 roller latch to a fire door assembly, and a roller latch is a friction hold rather than a positive latching device, so it should not be treated as fire door latching hardware. Within the same PDQ general hardware line, the privacy door latch is the model called out as ADA compliant and meeting NFPA 80 Sections 5.2.4.2 and 5.2.13.3. For a labeled opening, use hardware that is listed for that assembly.
