PDQ 7100 Series Grade 1 Heavy Duty Institutional Door Closer

Grade 1 Heavy Duty Institutional Door Closer, Cast Iron

The PDQ 7100 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty institutional surface door closer certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4. It pairs a high strength cast iron body with a forged steel main arm and a 1-1/2" hardened steel pinion, built for high traffic and abuse prone openings where a lighter body closer would wear out faster.

Spring power is adjustable from BF through size 6, with hydraulic controlled closing, hydraulic backcheck and a backcheck positioning valve standard, plus optional delayed action. The closer is tri-packed for regular, top jamb and parallel arm mounting, ships with a full plastic cover (a full metal cover is optional), and its mounting hole pattern retrofits LCN 4040 closers.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a 7100 needed instead of a lighter duty closer?
PDQ recommends the 7100 for high traffic exterior entrances, oversized or heavy doors, and abuse prone locations such as stadiums and schools. Its cast iron body and forged steel arm are built for repeated high force cycling, compared with the aluminum alloy bodies of the PDQ 5100 and 5500.

Which arm does PDQ recommend for high abuse doors?
PDQ recommends the Extra Duty Parallel Arm (EDA) for high abuse or vandalism prone doors, since it is reinforced beyond the standard parallel arm.

What spring sizes does the 7100 support?
The spring is adjustable from BF through size 6, so one closer body can cover light interior doors up to heavy exterior openings.

PDQ 7101BCPA689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the PDQ 7100 closer drop into existing LCN 4040 mounting holes?
Yes. The 7100's mounting hole pattern retrofits LCN 4040 closers, so you can reuse the existing prep on the door or frame when swapping out a 4040. The 7100 is also tri-packed for regular, top jamb and parallel arm mounting, so the same box covers whichever way the old closer was hung.
2) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand PDQ 7100 door closer?
No. The 7100 is non-handed, so one closer works on either swing. The one place hand matters is the optional full metal cover, which is ordered as FCMLH for left hand or FCMRH for right hand. The standard full plastic cover needs no hand.
3) Can a PDQ 7100 be used on a labeled fire door?
Yes. The 7100 is UL listed for labeled swinging fire doors rated up to and including 3 hours. If you need hold open on a fire door, note that a mechanical hold open arm is generally not permitted on a labeled opening, so specify a non-hold-open arm such as the standard Tri-Pack or the Extra Duty Parallel Arm.
4) Does the PDQ 7100 meet ADA opening force requirements for a school or hospital?
The 7100 complies with ADA and ICC/ANSI A117.1, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1. Spring power is adjustable from BF (barrier free) through size 6, so the same body can be dialed down to an ADA interior opening force or up for a heavy exterior door.
5) Which PDQ 7100 arm should I use on an abuse prone door like a school or stadium entrance?
PDQ recommends the Extra Duty Parallel Arm (EDA), which is reinforced beyond the standard parallel arm, for high abuse or vandalism prone doors. It is offered with or without hold open. If you want the arm itself to act as the stop, the Door Saver (parallel stop) arm does that, and the Door Saver with Spring Cushion Stop adds a cushioned stop for doors that get thrown open.
6) My frame face is less than 4 inches wide. Can I still top jamb mount a PDQ 7100?
Yes, with the right accessory. For top jamb mounting on a frame face under 4 inches, order the BPTJ top jamb back plate. A DPTJ top jamb drop plate is available for standard top jamb mounting, and an NFB narrow frame bracket is offered for narrow frame conditions. For parallel arm mounting where the top rail is short, the DPPA parallel arm drop plate applies.
7) Does the PDQ 7100 have backcheck and delayed action, or do I have to specify them?
Hydraulic backcheck and a backcheck positioning valve are standard on every 7100, so no extra option is needed to protect the door on a windy exterior opening. Delayed action is optional and is called out in the order code: 01 is non-delayed action, 41 adds delayed action on top of backcheck. Delayed action is worth specifying where you need slow egress time, such as classroom or healthcare doors with carts and wheelchairs.
8) When should I step up to a PDQ 7100 instead of a lighter aluminum body closer?
Go to the 7100 for high traffic exterior entrances, oversized or heavy doors, and abuse prone openings such as stadiums and schools. It uses a cast iron body, a forged steel main arm and a 1-1/2 inch (38mm) hardened steel pinion, where PDQ's 5100 and 5500 closers use aluminum alloy bodies. On a low traffic interior office door the heavier body is more closer than the opening needs.
9) What mounting hardware comes with the PDQ 7100 closer?
Sex nuts and bolts plus screws are included, and self drilling self tapping screws are standard. The closer ships tri-packed with the brackets for regular, top jamb and parallel arm mounting, and a full plastic cover. Drop plates, back plates, blade stop spacer, narrow frame bracket and the full metal cover are separate line items you select when ordering.
10) How do I read a PDQ 7100 part number like 7101BCPA605?
The pieces stack up: 7100 is the series, the next digit set covers delayed action (01 non-delayed, 41 delayed), BC is backcheck, the arm code follows (PA for parallel arm, EDA for extra duty parallel), and the trailing three digits are the BHMA finish, 605 for bright brass. Each configuration of arm, option and finish carries its own PDQ part number.
11) Is a track arm available on the PDQ 7100, and why would I choose it over a parallel arm?
Yes, Track Arm and Track Arm Hold Open are both offered. A track arm runs in a slide channel and keeps a lower, tighter profile against the door and frame, which is what architects usually want on a visible entry; a parallel arm projects out but gives you more control options such as the Door Saver parallel stop and the Extra Duty arm for abuse resistance.
12) Is the PDQ 7100 door closer TAA compliant for a government job?
Yes, the 7100 is TAA compliant, and it is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 with UL listing for labeled swinging fire doors up to 3 hours. That combination is what most federal, education and healthcare specs call for on an institutional closer.
13) Can tenants or staff adjust the closing speed on the PDQ 7100 after install?
The adjustment valves are staked, which keeps them from being backed out and tampered with on the opening. Closing is hydraulically controlled and the backcheck positioning valve is standard, so an authorized tech can still tune it; it is the casual over-adjustment that is designed out.
14) What finishes does the PDQ 7100 door closer come in, and can I match the other closers in my building?
Six finishes: 605 bright brass, 625 bright chrome, 689 aluminum, 693 black, 695 duro bronze and 696 gold. 689 aluminum and 693 black are the usual matches for existing commercial openings. These are standard BHMA finish numbers, so you can match the number already stamped on the hardware you are replacing.
