PDQ I0160 Conventional Mortise Cylinder

PDQ Conventional Mortise Cylinders

PDQ conventional mortise cylinders are standard, non-interchangeable pin tumbler cylinders for locks and trim that take a mortise cylinder. They come in 15/16, 1-1/8, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch lengths (length includes the cam), in seven finishes, and in the Schlage C keyway or a range of other manufacturers' keyways, so a replacement can match an existing key system. Dummy cylinders are also offered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a standard cylinder differ from an interchangeable core?
A standard PDQ cylinder rekeys the traditional way, by re-pinning or removing the cylinder, generally with a locksmith. An interchangeable core can be swapped with a control key, which PDQ recommends where keys change often.

PDQ I0160572 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What length mortise cylinder do I need for my PDQ I0160 replacement?
The I0160 conventional mortise cylinder comes in 15/16, 1-1/8, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inch lengths, and the length figure includes the cam. Measure the cylinder you are pulling out from the face of the shell to the back, cam included, and match it. Dummy versions use 1 inch in place of the 15/16. Standard commercial mortise locks most often take the 1-1/8 inch cylinder; longer ones are used where thicker doors or trim push the cylinder further out.
2) Can a PDQ I0160 cylinder be keyed to my existing Schlage keys?
Yes, if your system is on a Schlage keyway. The I0160 is Schlage C standard, and Schlage C-K and Schlage E are also orderable. Beyond Schlage it can be supplied in Arrow AR1, Corbin 59A1, Corbin 60, Corbin L4, Russwin D1, Russwin 981, Sargent LA, Sargent RA-RC, Accentra (Yale) E1R and GA, Falcon E-R, Kwikset, or PDQ's restricted TA keyway. Keying to an existing system means supplying the bitting or a key to the supplier; the cylinder itself ships KD, KA4, or 0-bitted.
3) Will the PDQ I0160 fit any lock that takes a mortise cylinder?
It is a standard threaded pin tumbler mortise cylinder, so it goes into mortise locks and into trim built for a mortise cylinder, exit device trim, rim-style trim with a mortise prep, deadbolts and similar. What decides the fit is length and cam. Confirm the cylinder length your lock case or trim calls for, since this cylinder is offered at 15/16, 1-1/8, 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 inches with the cam included in that figure.
4) What is the difference between ordering KD, KA4, and 0-bitted on this cylinder?
Three keying choices on the I0160. KD is keyed random, so every cylinder has its own key, which is what you want for separate tenants or offices. KA4 is keyed alike in groups of three to four, for a suite or a set of doors one person opens with one key. 0-bitted (also called 1-bitted) arrives unpinned to a working combination, which is how a locksmith buys it to pin into an existing master key system on site.
5) Should I use a conventional mortise cylinder or an interchangeable core?
It comes down to how often keys change. A conventional cylinder like the PDQ I0160 is rekeyed by re-pinning, which usually means pulling the cylinder and a locksmith's time. An interchangeable core is swapped out with a control key in seconds, which is what PDQ recommends where turnover is high, think student housing or short-term tenants. For a building where keys rarely change, the conventional cylinder is the simpler item to stock and specify.
6) What do I have to specify when ordering a PDQ I0160 cylinder?
Four things, and all four are required to get the right part: cylinder length (15/16, 1-1/8, 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 inch), finish, keyway, and keying. Each combination carries its own PDQ part number, for example I0160570 is the 15/16 inch in 605 bright brass, and I0160173 is the 1-1/2 inch in 626 satin chrome. If you are standardizing a building, lock the keyway and finish first and then order lengths per opening.
7) What finishes does the PDQ I0160 mortise cylinder come in, and can I match the rest of my door hardware?
Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 flat black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. All seven are available in each of the four cylinder lengths. If your levers and exit trim are specified by BHMA number, match the cylinder to that same number, 626 satin chrome with 626 trim, 613E with dark bronze openings.
8) Is there a PDQ mortise cylinder that looks like a lock but does not key?
Yes, a dummy cylinder is offered in the I0160 family. It has no keyway and no operating function; it fills a cylinder hole for appearance, which is common on inactive leaves and on dummy trim. Order it with the Dummy keyway selection, and note the dummy uses a 1 inch length where the keyed version is 15/16 inch.
9) Is the PDQ I0160 a commercial-duty cylinder or residential?
The I0160 is a commercial door hardware cylinder, which is why it is offered in BHMA-numbered architectural finishes and in a dozen-plus commercial keyways rather than just a residential one. The Kwikset keyway is available for buildings that inherited residential key systems on back-of-house or tenant doors.
