PDQ PL1 Padlock, 1/4" Shackle Diameter (Frangible Shackle)

Heavy Duty Solid Brass SFIC Padlock

The PDQ PL Series padlock has a US26D (626 satin chrome) plated solid brass body for corrosion resistance and an anti-cut molybdenum shackle for resistance to bolt cutters. A protective blue bumper reduces surface wear, and a double ball bearing locking mechanism adds security.

The PL accepts rekeyable and changeable 6 or 7-pin small format interchangeable core (SFIC) cylinders, sold separately, so it can be keyed into the same core-based master key system used on other doors. A patented shackle change design allows shackle replacement without disassembling the body.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the PL1, PL2 and PL3 models?
They differ in body size and shackle diameter. PL1 is 1-9/16" with a 1/4" shackle, PL2 is 1-25/32" with a 5/16" shackle, and PL3 is 1-31/32" with a 3/8" shackle.

Can the PL padlock be keyed to match PDQ door locks?
Yes. The PL Series accepts 6 or 7-pin small format interchangeable cores (SFIC), so it can be keyed into the same core-based master key system already used on PDQ mortise and cylindrical locks.

What is key retaining mode?
The PL includes a set screw that converts the padlock to key retaining mode, so the key cannot be removed unless the shackle is locked.

PDQ PL1BSF7L626FS – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the PDQ PL1 padlock come with a cylinder, or do I have to order the core separately?
The core is separate. The PL1 ships SFIC prepped, less core, and accepts a standard 6-pin or 7-pin small format interchangeable core. Budget a core per padlock, and specify the same keyway and pin count you already run so it drops into your existing system.
2) Can a PDQ PL1 padlock be keyed into the same master key system as my building doors?
Yes, if your doors run small format interchangeable cores. The PL Series takes 6 or 7-pin SFIC cylinders, the same cores used on PDQ mortise and cylindrical locks, so the padlock sits on the same core-based master key system as the openings. If your doors use large format or proprietary cylinders, the PL1 will not key alike with them.
3) What does the frangible shackle on the PL1-B actually do, and when would I want it?
A frangible shackle is made to break away under force rather than hold indefinitely. PDQ offers it on the PL1-B only, in the 1-1/2 inch shackle height. If you want the padlock to resist bolt cutters instead, order the standard anti-cut molybdenum shackle version; stainless steel shackles are special order.
4) Should I use the PL1, PL2 or PL3 for a chain link gate?
Shackle diameter is what decides it. The PL1 has a 1/4 inch shackle in a 1-9/16 inch body, the PL2 a 5/16 inch shackle in a 1-25/32 inch body, and the PL3 a 3/8 inch shackle in a 1-31/32 inch body. For gate chain or a heavier hasp, the thicker PL2 or PL3 shackle is the one that fits through and holds up; the PL1's 1/4 inch shackle suits lighter hasps and cabinet or locker-style applications. Shackle heights run 3/4 inch up to 4 inches across the series.
5) Will a 1-1/2 inch shackle height clear my hasp?
The PL1-B gives 1-1/2 inches of shackle vertical clearance, measured as the B dimension in PDQ's dimension key. Measure the stacked thickness of your hasp or chain plus the opening it passes through; if that exceeds 1-1/2 inches you need a taller shackle, and the PL Series goes up to 4 inches.
6) Is the PDQ PL1 padlock suitable for outdoor gates?
It is built for it. The body is solid brass plated US26D (626 satin chrome) for corrosion resistance, with a protective blue bumper to limit surface wear and a double ball bearing locking mechanism. PDQ lists gates, industrial facilities, and K-12 and higher education campuses as typical applications. It is a commercial-duty padlock, not a residential one.
7) How do I keep staff from walking off with the key still in the padlock?
Use key retaining mode. The PL includes a set screw that converts the lock so the key cannot be pulled unless the shackle is locked. That is the usual setup on gates and shared storage where an unlocked padlock left hanging open is the real problem.
8) If the shackle gets cut or damaged, do I have to replace the whole PDQ PL padlock?
No. The PL Series uses a patented shackle change design, so the shackle can be swapped without disassembling the body. For a fleet of padlocks across a campus that means you keep the brass body and the core and replace only the shackle.
9) What exactly do I specify when ordering a PDQ PL1?
Four things on the PL1: finish (626 satin chrome), shackle height (B, 1-1/2 inch), core prep (SFIC prep, less core, 6 or 7-pin), and shackle type (FS, frangible). A chain option is also selected at order. The core itself is a separate line.
