Pemko CFM83 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What applications are Pemko FM series continuous geared hinges designed for?
FM series hinges are built for standard duty commercial doors including office buildings, schools, and retail spaces. They work well on interior and exterior doors up to standard weight limits. The full mortise design provides clean aesthetics and reliable operation.
2) Are these hinges compatible with fire rated door assemblies?
Check the specific model's fire rating and listing information before installation. Many continuous hinges can be used in fire rated assemblies when properly listed. Verify compliance with local fire codes and manufacturer specifications for your application.
3) How do I determine proper handing for FM series hinges?
Stand on the secure side of the door. If hinges are on your right, order right hand. If on your left, order left hand. The geared design requires specific handing for proper operation. Double-check handing before ordering to avoid field issues.
4) What finish options are available for these continuous hinges?
Standard finishes include mill aluminum, dark bronze anodized, and other architectural finishes. Specific options vary by model. Choose finishes that match existing hardware and meet project specifications for durability and appearance.
5) What door weight and size limits apply to FM series hinges?
Standard duty rating supports typical commercial door weights. Check manufacturer specifications for exact weight limits based on door height. Oversized or heavy doors may require heavy duty models. Verify door dimensions and weight before selection.
6) Do these hinges meet ADA accessibility requirements?
Continuous hinges can support ADA compliance when properly specified and installed. The geared operation provides smooth door movement with consistent opening force. Verify specific model performance meets ADA opening force requirements for your application.
7) What accessories are available for FM series hinges?
Common accessories include mounting screws, shims, and installation templates. Some models offer optional stops or hold-open devices. Check with manufacturer for compatible accessories specific to your hinge model and application requirements.
8) How do I install full mortise continuous geared hinges?
Route mortises in both door and frame to manufacturer template dimensions. The hinge leaves sit flush when properly mortised. Use manufacturer-specified fasteners and follow torque requirements. Proper mortising is critical for smooth operation and alignment.
9) What maintenance do continuous geared hinges require?
Periodically clean hinge leaves and lubricate pivot points with manufacturer-approved lubricant. Check fastener tightness during routine maintenance. The geared mechanism requires minimal service but benefits from keeping debris out of the gear teeth.
10) Can I substitute FM series hinges for other continuous hinge models?
Compare load ratings, dimensions, and mounting requirements before substituting. Different series may have varying mortise depths or fastener patterns. Verify the replacement hinge meets original specifications and performance requirements for your application.
11) How do these hinges perform in exterior applications?
Performance depends on finish selection and environmental conditions. Anodized finishes provide better corrosion resistance than mill finishes. Consider local climate conditions and specify appropriate finishes for long-term exterior exposure.
12) What measurements do I need to order the correct hinge?
Measure door height, thickness, and frame conditions. Note any existing mortise dimensions if replacing hinges. Specify handing, finish, and any special requirements. Door weight and frequency of use also affect model selection.
