Pro-Lok SB20 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a regular carbide masonry or cobalt drill bit work on safe hardplate instead?
No. Hardplate is a hardened, often carbide-impregnated barrier specifically built to destroy ordinary bits. The SB20 is a tungsten carbide tipped bit ground for that job, with the rake and chisel geometry changed to survive the heat and pressure. Standard HSS, cobalt, or masonry bits will dull or shatter on hardplate.
2) What size is the Pro-Lok SB20 safe bit?
It is a 1/2 inch diameter bit with a 6 inch overall length. Pro-Lok also gives the tip size in metric as 12.7 mm, which is the same 1/2 inch. The 6 inch length gives you reach past the outer skin of a safe door to the hardplate behind it.
3) Why does the Pro-Lok safe bit have a negative rake angle and a shortened chisel edge?
Both are there to keep the carbide tip alive. A negative rake angle puts the cutting edge in compression rather than letting it dig, and a shortened chisel edge cuts the load at the center of the bit where a standard point tends to break down. Pro-Lok's stated result is better cutting effectiveness with fewer tip failures in hardplate.
4) Does the Pro-Lok SB20 come in more than one size or as part of a set?
The SB20 is a single item, sold as the 1/2 inch by 6 inch bit on its own. There is one model under it, so nothing to specify beyond the size when you order. Pro-Lok makes safe bits in other diameters and lengths under the same SB family if you need a different reach or hole size.
5) What kind of drill should I run a 1/2 inch safe bit in?
A 1/2 inch shank bit needs a drill with a 1/2 inch chuck capacity, and hardplate work wants low RPM with steady pressure, not speed. The SB20's carbide tip is ground to take the heat, but running it fast is still the quickest way to cook an edge. Locksmiths normally use a drill rig or safe drilling mount rather than freehand for this.
