RAB SMKEZPAN2X2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes does the RAB EZPAN surface mounting kit come in?
Three sizes, matched to the panel they mount: 1x4, 2x2, and 2x4. The part numbers are SMKEZPAN1X4, SMKEZPAN2X2, and SMKEZPAN2X4. Order the kit that matches the EZPAN panel footprint you already have, not the size of the opening you are covering.
2) Do I need a drop ceiling grid to install a RAB EZPAN panel with this kit?
No. The EZPAN surface mounting kit is made for direct surface installation, so the panel mounts to a hard ceiling or wall with no recessed prep and no suspended T-bar grid required. That is the reason it exists, for jobs like corridors, closets, and drywall ceilings where there is no grid to lay a panel into.
3) I manage several buildings with EZPAN panels in different sizes. Can I stock one surface kit for all of them?
No, the kit is size specific. A 2x2 panel needs SMKEZPAN2X2, a 2x4 needs SMKEZPAN2X4, and a 1x4 needs SMKEZPAN1X4. If your properties mix panel sizes, stock the kit per size. The white finish is the same across all three, so the look stays consistent building to building.
4) Is the RAB EZPAN surface mount kit a light fixture or just the mounting hardware?
Hardware only. The EZPAN kit is catalogued as a non-fixture item, meaning it carries no lamp or LED of its own. You buy the EZPAN flat panel separately and this kit is what gets it onto the surface.
5) How far off the ceiling will an EZPAN panel sit once this surface kit is installed?
The RAB EZPAN surface mounting kit is a 3.74 by 1.97 inch profile, so it adds a shallow frame rather than a deep housing. For low-clearance spaces, stairwells, and corridors with tight headroom, that low build-out is usually the deciding factor over a pendant or suspended option.
6) What finish is the RAB EZPAN surface mounting kit, and will it match a white ceiling?
White. The kit is finished white throughout so it blends against standard white ceiling and wall surfaces, which matters because the frame stays visible once the panel is surface mounted rather than tucked into a grid.
