1) Does the RACO 145 octagon box have built-in cable clamps, or do I need NM connectors?
The RACO 145 comes with integrated NMSC clamps, so Romex lands directly in the box without separate NM cable connectors. It is set up for nonmetallic sheathed cable wiring systems. If you are pulling EMT or AC cable instead, you would use the 1/2 in. knockouts with the appropriate fittings rather than the clamps.
2) Will the RACO 145 mount a ceiling light fixture?
Yes. The 4 in. octagon shape is the standard ceiling lighting outlet box, and the 1/8 in. and 1/4 in. side holes take common mounting accessories. Note that it is a No Bracket box, so it has no nail-on bracket for stud mounting, you fasten it directly through the box to a joist, blocking, or a bar hanger. For a paddle fan you need a box and support system specifically listed for fan support.
3) Is the RACO 145 octagon box UL Listed for commercial work?
The 145 is UL Listed, and it is intended for both residential and commercial wiring. Keep in mind it is a nonmetallic sheathed cable box, so in commercial occupancies where NM cable is not permitted by the local code or the job spec, you would use the knockouts with conduit fittings or specify a different box.
4) How many cables can I bring into the RACO 145 box?
There are three 1/2 in. knockouts for conduit or cable entry, plus the integrated NMSC clamps for Romex. That is enough for a feed and two switch legs or a feed-through plus a fixture drop on a typical ceiling outlet.
5) Does the RACO 145 come with a cover or a mounting bar?
No. The 145 is the box only, supplied without a bracket. A blank cover, fixture-stud cover, or round plaster ring is ordered separately, as is a bar hanger if you are mounting between joists.
6) What does drawn steel mean on the RACO 145 box, and is it better than welded?
Drawn means the body is formed from a single piece of steel with no welded seams or corners, so there is nothing to split open if the box takes a hit during rough-in or gets racked while fastening. Welded boxes are assembled from separate pieces. For a 4 in. octagon used as a ceiling outlet, the one-piece drawn body is the common choice.
