RACO RACO650 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a RACO 650 handy box mount in a wall cavity or is it surface mount only?
The RACO 650 ships with no bracket, so it is set up for surface mounting on a wall, stud face, joist or block. There is no nail-on or stud bracket to locate it in a cavity. If you need a box positioned in a new stud wall at a set depth, order a bracketed handy box instead; the 650 is the bracket-free version of the 4 x 2 body.
2) Does the RACO 650 come with a cover or a device plate?
No cover is included. The 650 is the box body only, 4 in. x 2 in. by 1.5 in. deep. You add the handy box cover separately, matched to what you are installing: a blank utility cover, a single-receptacle or duplex cover, or a toggle switch cover. Order the cover for a 4 x 2 handy box so the raised-edge profile lines up.
3) How many conduit entries does the RACO 650 handy box have, and what size?
Eleven 1/2 in. knockouts are spread around the 4 x 2 welded steel body, so you can bring EMT or cable in from the ends, back and sides without re-orienting the box. All eleven are 1/2 in., which matches 1/2 in. EMT connectors and 1/2 in. cable clamps/connectors.
4) What part number do I order for the RACO 4x2 welded handy box with no bracket?
RACO 650. That is the manufacturer part number, and it is the single configuration: welded steel, 4 in. x 2 in., 1.5 in. deep, eleven 1/2 in. knockouts, no bracket.
5) Can I use the RACO 650 to replace an existing surface-mounted handy box in a retrofit?
Yes, where the existing box is a 4 x 2 handy box mounted on the surface and your conduit or cable lands in 1/2 in. entries. The 650 is specified for retrofit as well as new construction wiring. Watch two things: the old box may have a bracket you were relying on for support, and if the old body was shallower than 1.5 in. the deeper 650 will stand further off the wall.
6) What is the difference between a welded and a drawn steel handy box?
The 650 is welded rather than drawn. A welded box is formed from sheet and seam-welded at the corners, which the RACO 650 uses for added strength on exposed surface work. Drawn boxes are pressed from a single piece with no seam. For a bracket-free surface box taking rigid conduit, the welded 650 is the heavier-duty choice of the two.
