RACO 768AMR – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the RACO 768AMR mud ring fit a 4 in. square electrical box?
Yes. The 768AMR is a 4 in. square ring built to mount directly to standard 4 in. square boxes, no adapter needed. The square profile lines up with the box's existing mounting holes, so it drops onto the same rough-in boxes used on commercial and residential jobs.
2) What does an adjustable mud ring do that a fixed-depth plaster ring can't?
The 768AMR's depth is adjustable, so one part covers a range of wall finish thicknesses. With drywall, plaster, or tile build-ups that vary from room to room, you set the ring so the device sits flush instead of stocking several fixed raised-ring depths and swapping parts at trim-out.
3) How many devices does the RACO 768AMR mud ring hold?
One. The 768AMR is a single-device (single-gang) ring, so it gives a properly sized opening for one switch, one receptacle, or another single-gang device on a 4 in. square box. For two devices in the same box you need a two-gang ring instead.
4) I need a single-gang ring for a nonmetallic fiberglass box, not a 4 in. square steel box. What should I use instead of the 768AMR?
Use the Allied Moulded 9345, a PVC 1-gang raised plaster ring in the FiberglassBox series, which is made to pair with that nonmetallic box system. The RACO 768AMR is built as a square cover that mounts directly to 4 in. square boxes without adapters, so it is the wrong mate for a fiberglass box rough-in.
5) What is the difference between the RACO 768AMR mud ring and the Allied Moulded 9345 plaster ring?
The RACO 768AMR is a 4 in. square adjustable mud ring for single-device openings on 4 in. square steel boxes, and its depth can be set in place to match drywall, plaster, or tile finish thickness. The Allied Moulded 9345 is a PVC 1-gang raised plaster ring from the FiberglassBox series, so it is a fixed-raise nonmetallic ring intended for Allied Moulded's fiberglass box system rather than an adjustable cover. Both serve one single-gang device; choose the 768AMR when the rough-in uses 4 in. square boxes and the finish depth is still variable, and the 9345 when the rough-in is the nonmetallic FiberglassBox system.
6) Is the RACO 768AMR mud ring UL Listed for commercial work?
UL Listed, yes. That covers it for code-compliant use in both commercial and residential electrical installations, which is what inspectors and institutional spec writers look for on a device ring.
7) Will a 4 in. square mud ring work behind a tile wall finish?
Yes, tile is one of the finishes the 768AMR is set up for. Because the ring depth adjusts, you can bring the device face out to the tile surface rather than leaving it recessed behind the tile and thinset, which is where fixed rings usually fall short.
8) For an inspection that requires a listed cover on a single-device box, which of these rings carries a listing?
The RACO 768AMR is UL Listed as a device cover for code-compliant commercial and residential electrical installations, which is the spec to cite when an inspector asks for a listed closure on a 4 in. square single-device box. Its spec sheet is published by the manufacturer for submittal use. The Allied Moulded 9345 is identified as a PVC 1-gang raised plaster ring in the FiberglassBox series, so confirm listing details with that manufacturer's documentation before substituting it on a submittal.
9) What part number do I order for the RACO single-gang adjustable ring?
Order RACO 768AMR. That is the manufacturer part number for the 4 in. square, single-device adjustable mud ring, and it is the only configuration this model covers.
