RACO 979 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the RACO 979 cover fit a 4-11/16 in. square electrical box?
Yes. The RACO 979 is sized at 4-11/16 inches square, so it mounts to standard 4-11/16 in. square boxes (the ones electricians often call 5-square). It will not cover a 4 in. square box, which is a smaller footprint and needs a 4 in. square device cover instead.
2) How many receptacles can I put in a RACO 979 cover?
Two. The 979 is a 2-duplex configuration cover, so it takes two duplex receptacles side by side in one surface-mounted plate, giving four outlets at the box. If you only need one device, you want a single-duplex 4-11/16 in. square cover instead.
3) Is the RACO 979 square cover UL listed for commercial work?
The 979 is cULus Listed, which covers both US and Canadian recognized safety standards, so it is acceptable on commercial and industrial installs where a listed device cover is required by the electrical inspector.
4) Can I use the RACO 979 for a GFCI or switch instead of receptacles?
The 979 is punched for duplex devices, so it accepts standard duplex receptacles and duplex-bodied devices such as a self-contained duplex GFCI that uses the same yoke and face opening. A toggle switch has a different opening and needs a toggle-configuration exposed work cover.
5) What do I need besides the RACO 979 cover to finish a surface outlet?
You still need the 4-11/16 in. square box itself, the two duplex receptacles, and the conduit fittings or connectors for the run. The 979 is the device cover only, sized to mount on a 4-11/16 in. square box for exposed conduit work.
6) Will RACO 979 covers match the other exposed outlets already in my building?
If the existing openings use 4-11/16 in. square boxes with two-gang duplex exposed work covers, the 979 is the same standardized footprint and device layout, so it drops in for a like-for-like replacement during retrofit or renovation work. Measure one existing box across the face first, since 4 in. square boxes look similar but are a smaller size.
7) What is the RACO part number for the 2-duplex 4-11/16 in. square exposed work cover?
Order it as RACO 979. That is the manufacturer part number for the 4-11/16 in. square, 2-duplex exposed work cover.
