1) Do the Milwaukee 2191-21 jobsite ear buds actually provide hearing protection, or just block sound with music?
Protection comes from the ear tips themselves, not from playing audio. The 2191-21 ships with foam tips rated 25 NRR and silicone tips rated 22 NRR, so they attenuate passively whether or not anything is streaming. Foam tips give the higher reduction; silicone is the lower-attenuation option if you want more awareness or an easier-fitting tip.
2) Can a crew still hear backup alarms and people talking while wearing these?
That is what the Jobsite Aware mode is for. It passes outside sound through at a level you control while reducing the intensity of loud external noises, so you can hold a conversation or hear a horn without pulling a bud out. If you want maximum attenuation instead, leave Aware mode off and use the foam tips.
3) How long will Milwaukee's 2191-21 ear buds last through a full shift?
Up to 10 hours of runtime on one charge of the buds, and up to 70 hours total when you top them off in the case, which carries a REDLITHIUM USB battery. In practice that means a full day on the buds and a week or more of shifts before the case itself needs recharging.
4) Will these hold up to being dropped and to rain and concrete dust?
The 2191-21 buds are water and dust resistant and impact resistant, and the case is sealed and protective for transport in a tool bag. That is a jobsite durability spec rather than a swim rating, so treat them as rain- and dust-tolerant, not submersible.
5) How far can I walk from my phone before the audio cuts out?
Bluetooth 5.1 gives up to 55 feet of range on the 2191-21. Enough to set the phone on a bench and move around a room or a small work area, but a concrete wall or a couple of floors between you and the phone will cut it short of that figure.
6) Can I take phone calls with these on a noisy site without reaching for my phone?
Yes. The 2191-21 buds are phone call capable and have on-bud buttons for handling calls and audio, so you answer, hang up, and adjust playback without pulling out the phone. They also auto connect to previously paired devices as soon as they come out of the case.
7) Are these a substitute for over-the-ear muffs on a high-noise job?
Compare the numbers against what your site requires. The foam tips on the 2191-21 are 25 NRR and the silicone tips 22 NRR, which is in the range of typical ear plugs.
