1) How much door prep does the Rockwood 2962 flush bolt need in a wood door?
Two 1-1/8 inch diameter holes, that is the whole bore prep. Each face plate is 1-1/8" x 2-1/4", so the mortise at the door edge is small compared with older full length flush bolts. Rockwood shapes the prep to keep the veneer from splitting at the door corners, which is what usually ruins a field install on a finished wood door. Fasteners come in the box: 8 each #8 x 1" FH SMS, 8 each #8 x 3/4" FH combo screws, and 4 plastic anchors.
2) What is the difference between an automatic flush bolt and a manual flush bolt on a pair of doors?
An automatic set retracts on its own. On the 2962, opening the active leaf retracts both the top and bottom bolts, so the inactive leaf can be pulled open without anyone reaching up to a lever at the top of the door. A manual flush bolt has to be thrown and released by hand at each end, which is fine for a leaf that stays fixed all day but a nuisance where both leaves get used. 3) My door and frame are out of square, can the flush bolt be adjusted to reach the strike?
There is 1/2 inch of vertical adjustment in the bolt head rods, which covers unusual head and threshold clearances without re-prepping the door. There is also an override built in, so if the bolt head is blocked from entering the strike the mechanism gives rather than tearing up the door or the bolt.
4) I have hollow metal doors, not wood - what automatic flush bolt should I use instead of the Rockwood 2962?
Use the ABH 1860P/1862P automatic flush bolt pair, which is fire rated for 3 hours and includes a thermal lock. The Rockwood 2962 is built for fire rated wood core and composite doors, so a metal opening is outside what it is made for. If the metal pair is to be operated manually rather than automatically, the ABH 1854 series is a manual flush bolt set with fire bolt for metal doors, and the ABH 1855S is a manual single with a 3/4 inch throw for metal doors.
5) What flush bolt should I use if I need the inactive leaf key controlled instead of automatic?
Look at the cylinder operated flushbolts. The Adams Rite 1877 is a cylinder operated flushbolt for paired wood doors, and the Adams Rite 1870 series is a cylinder operated flushbolt with key control. Those put the inactive leaf under a key, so only a keyholder can throw or release it. The Rockwood 2962 works the other way: it is fully automatic and non-handed, releasing both bolts whenever the active door opens, with no key involved. Choose by whether the inactive leaf should be under key control or should free itself with the active leaf.
6) Do I need an automatic flush bolt like the Rockwood 2962, or will a manual flush bolt do?
An automatic set is what you want when the inactive leaf must free itself as the active leaf opens. The Rockwood 2962 is fully automatic - opening the active door retracts both the top and bottom bolts - with a maximum 3 pound closing force that makes it ADA compliant. The Rockwood 2962 is an automatic set that retracts top and bottom bolts when the active leaf opens, with a bottom fire bolt included, and its face plate measures 1-1/8 inches by 2-1/4 inches. A corner mount bolt also preps differently from the 2962, which needs only two 1-1/8 inch diameter holes in the door.
11) I only need to replace the bottom bolt on a fire rated pair - do I have to buy the whole Rockwood 2962 set?
Not necessarily. 16) For a satin stainless finish flush bolt, what are the options besides the Rockwood 2962?
The Rockwood 2962 is stainless steel in a 630 satin stainless steel finish, tested over 1 million cycles. Among comparable flush bolts, the Delaney 6 inch square end flush bolt is solid brass and the Orca Hardware 86SQ is a 6 inch flush bolt with radius corners.
