1) Does the Rockwood 320C latch guard have to be ordered handed?
No handing to specify. The 320 is non-handed, so one part covers left and right hand openings. That matters if you are buying for a building with doors swinging both ways, since you order one number and stock one part.
2) What stops someone from prying the door open at the latch with this guard installed?
Two things. The plate itself covers the latch so it cannot be shimmed or carded, and the 320 carries a jamb pin that engages the frame and resists the door being pried away from the jamb. It is .105 inch steel, stainless steel, so it takes a spreading attack rather than deforming out of the way.
3) Can the Rockwood 320C latch protector be unbolted by someone standing outside?
Not with a normal tool. It mounts with 5/16-18 carriage bolts and hex drive sex nuts, so the head on the outside face is a smooth carriage head with nothing to grip, and the drive side is on the secure face of the door. The bolts go through the door, which also means you drill through rather than screwing into the face.
4) What is the difference between the Rockwood 320C latch protector and the Don-Jo LP-307?
They are built for different door types. The Rockwood 320C is a 3 inch by 11 inch latch protector for cylindrical locks, made from stainless steel and secured with 5/16-18 carriage bolts and hex drive sex nuts, with a jamb pin that resists prying. The Don-Jo LP-307 is a 2-5/8 inch by 7 inch, 12-gauge steel latch protector made for aluminum storefront entrance doors on an out-swing opening. If the opening is a hollow metal or wood door with a cylindrical lockset, the 320C is the one dimensioned for it; if it is an aluminum storefront stile, the LP-307 is cut for that narrow stile.
5) Is the Rockwood 320 latch protector suitable for a school or hospital exterior door?
That is the intended market. It is a commercial door hardware item in stainless steel, and Rockwood door accessories are used on institutional buildings, offices, retail, educational, detention, sports facilities, hotel and restaurant work. Stainless holds up outdoors better than a plated steel guard.
6) What finish does the Rockwood 320C come in, and will it match my other stainless door hardware?
One finish only: 630, satin stainless steel, the same thing the old US number US32D describes. That is the standard satin stainless used on most commercial push plates, pulls and kick plates, so it lines up with the rest of a stainless opening. If your building is in a brass or bronze finish, this plate will not blend.
7) Do any of these latch protectors need to be ordered by hand of door?
The Rockwood 320C is non-handed, so one part number covers both left and right hand openings. The Don-Jo GLP-307, LP-307 and NELP-207 are each specified for out-swing doors, so the swing of the opening has to be confirmed before ordering those. For a fleet being standardized across many doors, the non-handed 320C removes the handing question from the count.
8) Do I need to buy fasteners separately for the Rockwood 320 latch guard?
The 320 is specified with 5/16-18 carriage bolts and hex drive sex nuts as its mounting hardware. What you will want on the truck is the hex driver for the sex nuts and a bit sized to drill the through-holes for 5/16 inch bolts, since these bolt through the door rather than fastening to the face.
